Diagnostic features
## Identification Fluorokanacite is most easily recognized by its characteristic purple or lilac color, fibrous structure, and silky luster on fracture surfaces. Perfect cleavage in two directions is also an important diagnostic feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with charoite, which also comes from Russia and has a purple color. However, charoite has a more complex, "swirling" texture and a different chemical composition. It differs from similarly appearing tinaksite by the absence of brownish and golden hues. It differs from kanacite (with which it is closely related) by the dominance of fluorine over hydroxyl groups, which, however, requires advanced chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are rare, usually in the form of elongated, lamellar or acicular columns. Most often, it forms fibrous, radial aggregates or dense, matted masses.
Geological environment
## Genesis Fluorokanacite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins associated with alkaline massifs of nepheline syenites. It crystallizes in the late stages of magmatic processes, in an environment rich in alkalis (sodium, potassium), calcium, and fluorine. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals such as microcline, nepheline, aegirine, eudialyte, lorenzenite, lamprophyllite, and especially with tinaksite and miserite. The presence of these associated minerals is a strong indication for identification. ## Localities The most important and practically the only significant locality of this mineral in the world is the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. All known collector-grade specimens originate from there.

## Quality Criteria Specimens with an intense, deep purple or lilac color are most valued by collectors. Aggregates with a clearly visible, silky fibrous structure are highly prized. Rare, well-formed crystals, even small ones, fetch significantly higher prices. Large, mineral-rich rock fragments with good color contrast are also sought after. ## Popular Localities The only source of high-quality fluorokanacite specimens is the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, specifically the Koashva apatite-nepheline ore deposit.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Fluorokanacite specimens should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft, dry brush or paintbrush to remove dust. Compressed air can be used from a safe distance. Due to its reactivity, contact with water, and especially acids, should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, detergents, and all chemical agents, including acids, which can damage or destroy the mineral, must be strictly avoided. It is sensitive to high temperatures and sudden changes in temperature. It should not be exposed to prolonged direct sunlight, which can cause color fading. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in dry conditions, preferably in closed, padded collector boxes or display cases away from sources of moisture. Due to its brittleness and perfect cleavage, it should be protected from impacts and vibrations.
