## Identification Flagstaffite can be identified by its unique occurrence on decaying wood, especially pine. Characteristic features include very low hardness (soft as wax), resinous luster, low weight, and fusibility at low temperatures. It often forms fine, acicular crystals in radial aggregates. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other natural resins or secondary organic minerals. It is distinguished from resins by its crystalline structure (though often visible only under magnification). Unlike most inorganic minerals, it is extremely soft, light, and fusible. ## Crystal Forms Flagstaffite crystals are usually very small, acicular or bladed, often elongated. They typically occur as radial aggregates, rosettes, coatings, or thin crusts on the surface of wood.

## Genesis Flagstaffite is a mineral of organic origin. It forms as a result of natural chemical processes occurring during the decomposition of plant matter, specifically terpenes contained in the wood of conifers, mainly pines. It is a product of resin aging under specific anaerobic or oxygen-limited conditions. ## Mineral Associations Flagstaffite occurs directly on organic material (wood). It does not form associations with typical inorganic minerals, as its formation environment is very specific. ## Localities The most important and type locality is the area around Flagstaff in Coconino County, Arizona, USA, where it was found on ponderosa pine trunks. It is an extremely rare mineral and known from only a few confirmed localities worldwide.

## Quality Criteria The most valuable flagstaffite specimens are those with well-formed, macroscopic crystals, forming aesthetic, radial aggregates on the original wood fragment (matrix). The size and richness of crystal aggregates significantly increase collecting value. The purity and lack of damage to these delicate crystals are crucial. ## Popular Localities The only classic and sought-after locality by collectors is the type locality in Arizona, USA. Specimens from this location are considered exemplary for this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Flagstaffite is extremely delicate, soft, and soluble in alcohol. It should not be cleaned wet. Any contaminants, such as dust, can only be removed very carefully using a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a distance. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, alcohol, organic solvents, and all chemicals must be strictly avoided. The mineral is sensitive to heat and can melt at low temperatures (below 100°C), so it should be protected from heat sources and direct sunlight, which could warm it. It is very brittle and soft, so any mechanical pressure should be avoided. ## Storage Flagstaffite specimens should be stored in stable conditions, in a tightly sealed container (e.g., a "micromount" box), to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. It is best kept in a cool, dark place.
