Fersmanite is a rare mineral from the silicate group, found in nepheline-syenite pegmatites, distinguished by its characteristic reddish-brown color.

## Characteristics Fersmanite is a complex silicate of titanium, niobium, sodium, and calcium, belonging to the group of rare minerals. It typically forms small, well-formed crystals with a tabular or short-prismatic habit. Its aggregates can be granular or massive. It is a brittle mineral, with a characteristic, intense reddish-brown or brown color. ## Physical Properties Fersmanite is characterized by a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs scale. Its luster is vitreous, and on fracture surfaces, it is greasy or resinous. It is a translucent mineral, and in thin splinters, even transparent. Its density ranges from 3.44-3.46 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs in shades from reddish-brown and chocolate-brown to dark brown. No named varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Fersmanite was first described in 1929 by Alexander Labuntsov. The mineral is named in honor of Alexander Fersman (1883-1945), a prominent Russian mineralogist and geochemist, researcher of the Khibiny Massif, where this mineral was discovered. ## Applications Fersmanite has no industrial application. It is of scientific and collector's interest only.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Fersmanite is identified by its characteristic reddish-brown color, vitreous luster, relatively high hardness, and specific occurrence environment – alkaline pegmatites. Well-formed, tabular crystals are also a diagnostic feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other brown titanium and niobium minerals occurring in similar parageneses, such as eudialyte (usually more pink/red, different crystal form), lorenzenite (often forms acicular crystals), or astrophyllite (characteristic lamellar habit and golden luster). Definitive differentiation often requires chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Fersmanite crystals are typically small, with a thick-tabular or short-prismatic habit, often with a square or rectangular outline. It also occurs in granular aggregates and irregular masses embedded in the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Fersmanite is a mineral of magmatic origin, crystallizing in the late stages of nepheline-syenite pegmatite formation. It forms in a strongly alkaline environment, rich in sodium, titanium, and niobium. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals typical of alkaline pegmatites, such as nepheline, aegirine, microcline, albite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, lamprophyllite, astrophyllite, and pectolite. ## Localities The most important and classic fersmanite localities are in Russia, in the alkaline massifs of the Kola Peninsula, primarily in the Khibiny Massif (Eveslogchorr, Kukisvumchorr, Yukspor mountains) and the Lovozero Massif. Outside Russia, its occurrence has been reported in the Ilimaussaq alkaline complex in Greenland.

## Quality Criteria Specimens with sharply defined, well-formed crystals of intense reddish-brown color, contrastingly set on a light rock matrix (e.g., on nepheline or albite), are most valued by collectors. The absence of mechanical damage and crystal size are also important – those exceeding a centimeter are already rare. ## Popular Localities The vast majority of the best collector specimens come from classic localities in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Specimens from other places, such as Greenland, are extremely rare on the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Fersmanite specimens should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft, dry brush to remove dust. Compressed air is permissible. Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids. Ultrasonic cleaners, which can cause cracks, should be avoided. It should not be heated or exposed to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Fersmanite should be stored under stable conditions, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. It is best kept in a closed display box or cabinet to protect it from dust and mechanical damage.
