It occurs as small, hexagonal, tabular crystals, usually not exceeding 0.2 mm in size. Crystals are most often intergrown with other minerals, mainly phlogopite and magnetite. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a vitreous luster and is transparent. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is approximately 7.5, which is typical for minerals in this group. The density calculated from the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is 4.10 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Observed specimens of ferrotaaffeite-6N'3S range in color from dark brown to almost black. Due to its extreme rarity and recent discovery, no varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name refers to its chemical composition – the dominance of iron (Latin: *ferrum*) – and its structural and chemical relationship to taaffeite. The "-6N'3S" suffix is part of the official IMA nomenclature and describes a specific stacking sequence in its crystal structure. The mineral was officially approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2011 under number 2011-035. It was discovered in material from the Tayozhnoye phlogopite-magnetite skarn mine in the Aldan Mountains, on the Aldan Plateau in Yakutia (Russia).

## Genesis Ferrotaaffeite-6N'3S forms under conditions of high-temperature contact metamorphism. It has been found in magnesian skarns that formed at the contact of syenite intrusions with dolomites. It is a product of metasomatic reactions occurring under these specific geological conditions. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (Tayozhnoye mine), ferrotaaffeite-6N'3S coexists with minerals such as phlogopite, magnetite, spinel (pleonaste), forsterite, enstatite, högbomite, clinohumite, geikielite, ilmenite, graphite, calcite, dolomite, baddeleyite, and hydrotalcite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of this mineral in the world is its type locality: the Tayozhnoye mine, located in the Aldan Mountains on the Aldan Plateau, in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia.

The presence of rare associated minerals is also crucial. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the Tayozhnoye mine in Russia. Material from this locality is extremely difficult to acquire and appears on the collector's market sporadically, mainly among specialized collectors of rare minerals and "micromounts."

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity and microscopic size of the crystals, which are typically intergrown in the rock matrix, mechanical cleaning is neither recommended nor practiced.
