Ferrostrunzite is a rare, hydrated iron phosphate, forming aggregates of fine, acicular crystals with a characteristic straw-yellow color.

## Characteristics Ferrostrunzite is a hydrated iron phosphate belonging to the strunzite group. It occurs as small, radial or tangled aggregates, as well as crusts and coatings. These aggregates are composed of very fine, acicular or fibrous crystals, which rarely reach sizes observable with the naked eye. Its appearance is delicate, often resembling felt or mineral wool. ## Physical Properties Ferrostrunzite crystals are flexible and have a hardness of approximately 2 on the Mohs scale, meaning they are very soft. The luster is silky, particularly visible on the surfaces of aggregates. It is a translucent to opaque mineral. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is characterized by a typical straw-yellow, yellow to yellowish-brown color. No distinct color varieties or commercial forms are recognized. ## History and Name Ferrostrunzite was first described in 1983 by D.R. Peacor, P.J. Dunn, and W.B. Simmons. Its name refers to its chemical composition – the dominance of iron (Latin: *ferrum*) – and its structural similarity to strunzite. It was recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1982. ## Uses Ferrostrunzite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare phosphate minerals and systematic minerals.

## Identification Ferrostrunzite can be identified by its characteristic mode of occurrence – radial or tangled aggregates of fine, acicular crystals. Key features also include its straw-yellow color, silky luster, and very low hardness. It typically occurs as a secondary mineral in phosphate pegmatites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other minerals from the strunzite group, such as strunzite (usually lighter, whitish or pale yellow) or ferristrunzite. Other secondary phosphates, such as cacoxenite, which often takes on more golden or brownish hues, also have a similar appearance. Definitive differentiation requires advanced chemical (EDS) or X-ray (XRD) analyses. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are strongly elongated, acicular or fibrous, often grouped into radial aggregates resembling rosettes or fans. It also forms tangled, felt-like masses and thin crusts on other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Ferrostrunzite is a secondary mineral, formed as a result of hydrothermal processes or weathering in the oxidation zones of phosphate-rich deposits. It most commonly forms in vugs and fractures of granitic phosphate pegmatites, as a product of alteration of primary iron-bearing phosphate minerals, such as triphylite. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other secondary phosphates. Its typical associated minerals include rockbridgeite, strengite, laueite, stewartite, mitridatite, as well as quartz, muscovite, and goethite. ## Localities The most important localities worldwide, from which well-formed specimens originate, include the Bull Moose Mine in Custer (South Dakota, USA), which is its type locality. It also occurs in Hagendorf-Süd in Bavaria (Germany), in Mangualde (Portugal), and in the Sapucaia mine in Minas Gerais (Brazil).

## Quality Criteria The most valued by collectors are specimens with clearly formed, radial aggregates of intense, straw-yellow color. The size and aesthetics of these aggregates, as well as their contrast with the rock matrix, are important. Specimens where the acicular crystals are well-separated and undamaged achieve higher value. Association with other rare phosphates is also significant. ## Popular Localities Classic and most sought-after specimens come from the type locality – the Bull Moose Mine in South Dakota, USA. Specimens from Hagendorf, Germany, known for their rich mineral associations, are also highly prized.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Ferrostrunzite specimens are extremely delicate and fragile. Cleaning should be kept to an absolute minimum. Only careful dust removal with a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance is permissible. Avoid contact with water, which can damage the delicate crystals. ## What to Avoid Ultrasonic cleaners, all chemical agents, acids, and detergents should be absolutely avoided. The mineral is sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. It should not be heated or exposed to direct sunlight, which can cause dehydration and color change. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, stable containers (e.g., "micromount" type) that protect them from dust, mechanical damage, and sudden changes in humidity. Due to its fragility, avoid placing other minerals in direct contact with ferrostrunzite.
