Description

## Characteristics Ferripyrophyllite is a mineral from the phyllosilicate group, being the iron (Fe³⁺) analogue of pyrophyllite. It most commonly occurs as very fine-grained, compact or earthy masses. Less frequently, it forms lamellar or scaly aggregates. Its appearance is usually inconspicuous, and macroscopically crystalline specimens are rare. Due to its texture, it may feel slightly greasy or slippery to the touch, similar to talc. ## Physical Properties It is a very soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 1.5-2, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It is characterized by perfect cleavage in one direction, which is typical for minerals with a layered structure. Its luster is most often dull or earthy, and in more crystallized aggregates, it can be pearly. It is a translucent to opaque mineral. The calculated density is approximately 3.13 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Ferripyrophyllite ranges in color from yellowish-brown to brown. Its color is directly related to the presence of trivalent iron in its structure. There are no named color varieties or commercial varieties. ## History and Name The mineral's name refers to its chemical composition – the dominance of iron (Latin: *ferrum*) and its structural similarity to pyrophyllite. It was recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1978. It was first described based on material from the Akenobe mine in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. ## Uses Ferripyrophyllite has no industrial significance. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is sought after by collectors specializing in rare minerals or systematics.

## Identification Characteristic features of ferripyrophyllite include its low hardness (can be scratched with a fingernail), yellowish-brown color, dull or pearly luster, and occurrence as earthy or scaly masses. It may feel slippery or greasy to the touch. However, definitive identification most often requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Ferripyrophyllite can be confused with other clay minerals of similar color and habit, such as glauconite, celadonite, or minnesotaite. Distinguishing them without specialized equipment is practically impossible. It can also be mistaken for earthy aggregates of goethite, which is, however, much harder (5-5.5 on the Mohs scale) and has a characteristic yellowish-brown streak. ## Crystal Forms This mineral primarily forms cryptocrystalline, earthy, or very finely scaly aggregates. Well-formed crystals visible to the naked eye are virtually nonexistent.

Geological environment

## Genesis Ferripyrophyllite is a mineral of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. It forms as a result of the alteration of iron-rich rocks, as well as in some sedimentary iron formations. Its presence indicates specific chemical conditions during rock formation. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with quartz, pyrite, minnesotaite, greenalite, and stilpnomelane. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for this mineral is the Akenobe mine in Japan, from which the type material originates. It is also known from the Gunflint Iron Formation, on the border of Minnesota (USA) and Ontario (Canada), as well as from several locations in the Czech Republic (e.g., Chvaletice).

Care and storage

## Cleaning Ferripyrophyllite specimens are extremely soft and fragile, requiring very careful handling. For dust removal, it is best to use a soft, dry brush. Wet cleaning should be avoided, especially for earthy and poorly consolidated specimens, which may disintegrate upon contact with water. ## What to Avoid The mineral is very susceptible to scratching – avoid contact with harder minerals. Ultrasonic cleaners or any chemical agents should not be used. It must be protected from abrasion and falls. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in separate, sealed boxes or display cases to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Display should be in a location where the mineral will not be exposed to touching or vibrations.
