## Characteristics Ferriprehnite is a mineral from the layered silicate group, closely related to prehnite. It is its iron (Fe³⁺) analogue, where iron replaces aluminum in the crystal structure. It most often forms fan-shaped or spherulitic aggregates, composed of very fine, tabular or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 1 mm. Due to the small size of the crystals, its macroscopic features are difficult to assess without specialized equipment. ## Physical Properties Ferriprehnite crystals exhibit a hardness of approximately 4.5-5 on the Mohs scale. The luster is vitreous, and the mineral is translucent. The calculated density is approximately 3.33 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is characterized by a color ranging from dark brown to almost black, which is typical for silicate minerals with high iron content. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Ferriprehnite was first described in 2011 by J. Cajzl, F. Novák, J. Sejkor, M. Novák, J. Plášil, and P. Goliáš. Its name directly refers to its chemical composition – it is an iron-rich ("ferri") analog of prehnite. The type locality is recognized as the Věžná I quarry in the Vysočina Region, Czech Republic. ## Applications Ferriprehnite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and scientists studying silicates.

## Identification Macroscopic identification of ferriprehnite is practically impossible and requires advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy or chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Preliminary indications may include its dark brown to black color, the habit of its aggregates (spherulitic, fan-shaped), and its coexistence with other minerals typical of its formation environment. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with dark varieties of prehnite, babingtonite, epidote, or tourmaline. Prehnite is usually green or yellowish and rarely takes on such dark colors. Babingtonite and epidote have different crystal forms and higher hardness. Definitive differentiation requires chemical analysis confirming the dominance of iron over aluminum. ## Crystal Forms Ferriprehnite forms thin, tabular crystals with a bladed habit, which combine into fan-shaped, radial, or spherulitic aggregates. Single, well-formed crystals are extremely rare.

Geological environment

## Genesis Ferriprehnite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in fissures and vugs of metamorphic rocks, such as serpentinites, and within some igneous rocks. Its crystallization is associated with the circulation of solutions rich in calcium, silica, and iron. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly coexists with prehnite, andradite (demantoid variety), diopside, clinochlore, titanite, apatite, calcite, and zeolites. ## Localities The most important and well-documented ferriprehnite localities in the world are: - Czech Republic: Věžná I quarry in the Vysočina Region (type locality). - Italy: Val Malenco in Lombardy, where it occurs in association with demantoid in serpentinites.

## Quality Criteria The collector's appeal of ferriprehnite is mainly due to its rarity. The most valued specimens are those showing well-formed, even if small, spherulitic or fan-shaped aggregates of intense, dark color. The aesthetic composition with associated minerals is also crucial, especially with color-contrasting demantoid, prehnite, or calcite. Due to the microscopic nature of the crystals, specimens are usually small (so-called "micromounts"). ## Popular Localities The most well-known specimens, prized by collectors, come from two main localities: Věžná in the Czech Republic and Val Malenco in Italy. Specimens from Italy, due to their frequent coexistence with green demantoid, are considered particularly aesthetic.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the delicate nature of the aggregates, cleaning with compressed air is recommended to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and brushes, which can mechanically damage the fine crystals. ## What to Avoid Avoid all chemicals, especially acids, which can react with the mineral. It should not be subjected to ultrasonic cleaning. Specimens should be protected from shocks and impacts. ## Storage Ferriprehnite specimens are best stored in enclosed "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. It is not sensitive to light, but protection from dust is crucial.
