Eucairite is a rare copper and silver selenide, forming metallic, silvery-white to creamy-yellow masses and coatings.

## Characteristics Eucairite is a rare mineral from the sulfide group, specifically a copper and silver selenide. It most commonly occurs as compact, granular, or massive aggregates, as well as coatings and crusts on other minerals. It rarely forms poorly developed crystals. Its characteristic features include a metallic luster and color, which on a fresh surface is silvery-white or tin-white, often with a creamy or yellowish tint. When exposed to air, it quickly tarnishes and darkens, changing color from brass-yellow to brown, and even black. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2.5, meaning it can be scratched by a copper wire. It is opaque and possesses a metallic luster. It is also quite dense, with a specific gravity ranging from 7.6 to 7.8 g/cm³. It is malleable and ductile, meaning it can be hammered and drawn into wires. ## Colors and Varieties Eucairite does not have named varieties. Its color is quite distinctive: from silvery-white and tin-white on a fresh fracture, through creamy-yellow, to brass-yellow and brown on weathered surfaces. Surface darkening is a rapid and typical process. ## History and Name The name eucairite comes from the Greek word *eukairos* (εὔκαιρος), meaning "opportune" or "lucky hit," which referred to the discovery of a new selenium-bearing mineral shortly after the element itself was discovered. The mineral was first described in 1818 by Jöns Jacob Berzelius based on samples from the Skrikerum deposit in Sweden. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, eucairite has no industrial applications. However, it is a sought-after and valued collector's mineral.

## Identification Key diagnostic features of eucairite include its metallic luster, silvery-white to creamy-yellow color on a fresh surface, and rapid darkening upon exposure to air. It is very soft (hardness 2.5) and heavy (high density). It often occurs in association with other selenides, such as berzelianite, umangite, or clausthalite. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Eucairite can be confused with other selenides, such as berzelianite (Cu₂Se), which is, however, more bluish-gray, or umangite (Cu₃Se₂), which has a characteristic violet-red color. From native silver, it differs by its lower hardness and tendency to yellow, not just blacken. From acanthite (Ag₂S), it differs in color on a fresh fracture. ## Crystal Forms Eucairite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, but well-formed crystals are extremely rare. It typically forms compact, granular aggregates, massive vein fillings, as well as dendritic or feathery aggregates. It also occurs as coatings and thin crusts.

Geological environment

## Genesis Eucairite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms at low to medium temperatures in ore veins rich in selenium. It forms under reducing conditions, often in association with other selenides, sulfides, and silver minerals. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other selenides, such as berzelianite, umangite, clausthalite, tiemannite, klockmannite, and naumannite. It is also accompanied by other ore minerals like chalcopyrite, pyrite, as well as calcite, barite, and quartz as gangue minerals. ## Localities The most important and historical locality, from which the best specimens originate, is the Skrikerum mine in Valdemarsvik, Sweden (type locality). Other known localities include Tumiñico in Argentina; the Předbořice mine in the Czech Republic; Lehrbach and Tilkerode in the Harz Mountains in Germany; as well as some deposits in Utah and Arizona in the USA.

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens by collectors are those with clearly visible, rich aggregates of eucairite, preferably with a fresh, bright color. Rare dendritic or feathery forms are exceptionally sought after. Association with other rare selenides is also significant, increasing the scientific and aesthetic value of the specimen. Contrast with light calcite or quartz is also desirable. ## Popular Localities Undoubtedly, the most classic and prized specimens come from the historical type locality – the Skrikerum mine in Sweden. Material from this location is considered exemplary. Specimens from Tumiñico in Argentina have also yielded good quality samples, often in rich associations.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Eucairite is very delicate and reactive. Wet cleaning should be avoided. To remove dust, a very soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance can be used. Any contact with water or chemicals can cause permanent damage or discoloration. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, cleaning agents, and other chemicals must be strictly avoided. The mineral is sensitive to moisture and atmospheric oxygen, which causes it to darken rapidly (patination). It should not be heated or exposed to prolonged intense light. ## Storage Eucairite specimens are best stored in airtight, acid-free "perky boxes," preferably with a desiccant. Display should be in enclosed display cases, under stable temperature and humidity conditions, away from direct sunlight.
