Diagnostic features
## Identification Characteristic features of esperanzaite include its unique form of occurrence as small, pale blue spheres (spherulites) with a silky luster, and its genesis. It reacts with hydrochloric acid and dissolves in water. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It may be confused with other secondary minerals of similar form and color, such as aurichalcite or rosasite. It is distinguished from them by the lack of reaction with acids (no effervescence) and chemical tests confirming the presence of arsenic, sodium, and aluminum. Final confirmation requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms It forms exclusively spherulitic aggregates composed of radially arranged, acicular or fibrous crystals. Individual, well-formed crystals are not observed.
Geological environment
## Genesis Esperanzaite is a secondary mineral that forms in the oxidation (weathering) zone of polymetallic deposits. It originates from the reaction of arsenic-rich solutions with surrounding rock minerals, such as scapolite. It occurs in vugs and fractures of rhyolitic rock. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with mimetite, quartz, opal (hyalite variety), hematite, goethite, and unidentified minerals from the scapolite group. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for esperanzaite worldwide is its type locality – the La Esperanza mine in Durango, Mexico.

## Quality Criteria The most prized specimens are those with numerous, well-formed, and undamaged spherulites of intense, pale blue color, contrasting with the dark matrix rock. The size of the aggregates and their distribution on the specimen are also important. Due to its extreme rarity, any authentic specimen is valuable. ## Popular Localities All collectible specimens come from a single location worldwide: the La Esperanza mine in Mexico.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using compressed air to remove dust. Contact with water is absolutely inadvisable, as the mineral is soluble in it. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water and all chemicals. The structure of the aggregates is very delicate and fragile, susceptible to mechanical damage. The mineral should be protected from moisture and high temperatures. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in sealed, airtight containers (e.g., "membrane box" or "perky box") away from sources of moisture, light, and dust. Due to its arsenic content, avoid inhaling dust and wash hands after handling the mineral.
