Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of eskimoite based on visual characteristics is practically impossible. Its appearance is very similar to many other rare lead and bismuth sulfosalts. Certain identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) to determine the chemical composition. The origin locality (Ivigtut) is a crucial clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Eskimoite is visually indistinguishable from co-occurring minerals such as vikingite, ourayite, gustavite, or aikinite. All form small, gray, metallic crystals. The differences between them lie in the proportions of metals (silver, lead, bismuth, copper) in the crystal structure, which can only be determined in the laboratory. ## Crystal Forms It forms elongated, bladed or acicular crystals with a rhombic cross-section. They usually occur as randomly scattered clusters or tangled aggregates embedded in other minerals, mainly quartz or galena.
Geological environment
## Genesis Eskimoite is a mineral of hydrothermal origin. It formed in the late stage of crystallization in ore veins cutting the unique cryolite deposit in Ivigtut, Greenland. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other, often equally rare sulfosalts. Its most common associations include ourayite, vikingite, galena, aikinite, berryite, cosalite, gustavite, as well as quartz and chalcopyrite. ## Localities The only confirmed and historically significant occurrence of eskimoite in the world is its type locality - the now defunct cryolite mine in Ivigtut, in the Kitaa region (West Greenland). All collectible specimens come from this single location.

## Quality Criteria The quality of eskimoite specimens, being micromounts, is assessed based on several criteria. The most important is the abundance and richness of aggregates - the more well-formed crystals on the smallest possible surface, the more valuable the specimen. The aesthetics of the composition and the presence of rare associated minerals, which enhance the scientific and visual value of the specimen, are also important. ## Popular Localities All valuable and highly prized eskimoite specimens by collectors come from a single, historical locality: the cryolite deposit in Ivigtut, Greenland. This deposit has long been exhausted and flooded, meaning that new specimens are no longer being acquired, and those available on the market come from old collections.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Eskimoite specimens are almost exclusively micromounts, which are very delicate. To remove dust, use only a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and susceptible to scratching. It should be protected from contact with harder minerals. As a sulfosalt, it can react with acids. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners or any wet cleaning methods. ## Storage The safest way to store is to place the specimen in a sealed micromount box, which protects it from dust, mechanical damage, and sudden changes in humidity. Store in stable room conditions.
