Ershovite is a rare, brown potassium, sodium, and iron silicate, forming flexible, fibrous aggregates, discovered in the Khibiny Massif in Russia.

## Characteristics Ershovite is a complex, hydrated layered silicate from the astrophyllite group of minerals. It occurs as aggregates of long, bladed or fibrous crystals, which often form dense, felted aggregates resembling felt. Individual "fibers" are flexible and easily separable. Its characteristic feature is a silky luster on the surfaces of aggregates and a vitreous luster on individual crystals. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 3. It is quite light, with a density close to 2.63 g/cm³. Crystals exhibit perfect cleavage in one direction, which, combined with their fibrous nature, makes them flexible and pliable, but not elastic – they do not return to their original shape after bending. ## Colors and Varieties Ershovite typically ranges in color from brown to dark brown, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. The streak is light brown. No named varieties of this mineral have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in 1991 in a pegmatite on Mount Kedykverpakhk in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. It was named in honor of the Russian mineralogist and crystallographer, Professor Vadim Viktorovich Ershov (1939–1989) of the Moscow Mining Institute, for his contribution to the study of alkaline minerals of the Kola Peninsula massifs. ## Uses Ershovite has no industrial application. It is solely a mineral of scientific and collector's interest, sought after for its rarity and unique form.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Ershovite is most easily recognized by its characteristic form – dense, felted aggregates of flexible, brown fibers with a silky luster. Its reaction to water (solubility) is also a diagnostic feature, though destructive. A light brown streak aids in identification. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other fibrous silicates, such as tinaksite or charoite, which also occur in alkaline massifs. Ershovite differs from them by its brown color, greater fiber flexibility, and lower hardness. Unlike asbestos, its fibers are bladed and do not separate as easily into single, thin needles. ## Crystal Forms It forms elongated, bladed crystals up to several centimeters long and up to 1 mm thick. Most often, they occur as dense, tangled or partially ordered fibrous and felt-like aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Ershovite is a hydrothermal mineral, crystallizing in the late stages of the evolution of highly differentiated nepheline-syenite pegmatites. It forms in cavities and fissures, where it precipitates from solutions rich in alkalis (sodium, potassium), iron, and silica. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals typical of the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs' pegmatites. It is most often associated with aegirine, natrolite, lorenzenite, eudialyte, nepheline, microcline, lamprophyllite, lomonosovite, and villiaumite. ## Localities The only confirmed and well-documented occurrences of ershovite in the world are the ultrabasic alkaline massifs on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The most important localities are Mount Kedykverpakhk (the type locality) and Mount Koashva in the Khibiny Massif, and the Lovozero Massif.

## Quality Criteria The most prized ershovite specimens are those with rich, dense, and well-formed fibrous aggregates of intense brown color and silky luster. The size of the aggregates and the absence of damage to the delicate fibers are important. The attractiveness of a specimen is enhanced by the presence of contrasting associated minerals, e.g., white natrolite or pink eudialyte. ## Popular Localities Undoubtedly, the most sought-after and classic specimens come from the type locality – Mount Kedykverpakhk in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. This is practically the only source of collector's material on the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Ershovite specimens are very delicate and sensitive to water. They should only be dry-cleaned, using a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance to remove dust from fibrous aggregates. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, which can damage or dissolve the mineral, must be absolutely avoided. All chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and high temperatures should also be avoided. Due to its low hardness and flexible, yet brittle nature, specimens are very susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage It is recommended to store ershovite in closed, airtight containers (e.g., "membrane boxes" or boxes with cotton) to protect it from dust, atmospheric moisture, and physical damage. It should not be displayed in areas with fluctuating humidity.
