Description

## Characteristics Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, in which the silver content typically ranges from 20% to 80%. It is not formally recognized as a distinct mineral species but rather as a variety of native gold. Its most characteristic feature is its color – from pale yellow to silvery-white, depending on the proportion of the two metals. The more silver in its composition, the lighter and less intense the color. It occurs as grains, flakes, nuggets, or, more rarely, as imperfectly formed crystals. ## Physical Properties Electrum possesses a strong, metallic luster and is completely opaque. Like pure gold, it is a very soft mineral (hardness 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale) and is extremely malleable and ductile, meaning it can be easily formed and stretched without breaking. Its density is high, approximately ranging from 12 to 15.5 g/cm³, depending on the content of the lighter silver. ## Colors and Varieties The color of electrum forms a continuum from golden-yellow (at low silver content) to almost white (at high silver content). The name "electrum" refers to this entire range. No named commercial varieties are distinguished, and classification is primarily based on the percentage content of gold and silver. ## History and Name The name comes from the Greek word *ἤλεκτρον* (elektron), which referred to both this metal and amber, probably due to a similar, pale yellow color. Electrum holds immense historical significance – it was used to mint the first known coins in the ancient kingdom of Lydia (in present-day Turkey) around 600 BCE. Pliny the Elder also described it in his "Natural History." ## Uses Historically, electrum was a valuable precious metal used for producing coins, jewelry, and ornamental objects. Today, it is mined as an ore of gold and silver. For collectors, it is an interesting and valuable mineral due to its historical connotations and aesthetic qualities.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Key diagnostic features of electrum include its characteristic pale yellow or silvery-yellow color, high density, and high malleability and ductility. Under pressure from a hard tool, it deforms but does not crumble. The streak is shiny and ranges from golden-yellow to pale yellow. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Electrum can be confused with several minerals: - **Native Gold:** Pure gold has a more intense, deep yellow color. Electrum is distinctly paler. - **Pyrite:** Known as "fool's gold," pyrite is much harder (scratches steel), brittle (breaks under pressure), and leaves a greenish-black streak. - **Chalcopyrite:** Has a more brassy-yellow hue, often with iridescent, blue-violet tarnish. It is also harder and brittle, and its streak is greenish-black. ## Crystal Forms Electrum most often forms irregular grains, flakes, scales, and nuggets. Well-formed crystals are rare and usually take forms typical of gold – octahedra, rhombic dodecahedra, and cubes. They often occur as skeletal, dendritic (branching), or wire aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Electrum forms under hydrothermal conditions, crystallizing from hot, metal-rich solutions circulating in rock fissures. It is a typical component of quartz-gold veins, often associated with volcanic activity. As a result of weathering and erosion of primary deposits, chemically resistant and heavy electrum is transported by water and accumulates in placer deposits in river and alluvial sediments. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with native gold, native silver, quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, and various telluride minerals. ## Localities Historically, an important source was Lydia in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). Classic collector specimens come from historical mines in Transylvania (Romania). Currently, electrum is extracted in many gold mining regions worldwide, including Nevada (e.g., Comstock Lode, Round Mountain) and California in the USA, as well as in Canada, Russia, and Australia.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp-edged crystals, which is a rarity for gold and its varieties. Dendritic (branching), reticulated, and wire forms are also very popular. The value of a specimen is enhanced by its size, luster intensity, and attractive placement on a contrasting matrix mineral, most often white quartz. Specimens from historical, long-exhausted localities fetch significantly higher prices. ## Popular Localities Among the most sought-after localities by collectors are the mines in the Transylvania region of Romania (e.g., Roșia Montană, Baia de Arieș), from which classic, historical specimens originate. The contemporary market is dominated by specimens from Nevada (USA), especially from the Round Mountain mine and the Bullfrog district, which provide beautiful, crystalline forms.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Electrum is a noble and chemically resistant metal. To remove dirt, warm water with a small amount of soap and a soft brush (e.g., a toothbrush) is usually sufficient. Specimens can be safely cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners, provided they are not mounted on a delicate or fractured matrix mineral. ## What to Avoid Due to its low hardness, electrum is very susceptible to scratching. Avoid contact with harder minerals and abrasive materials. It is resistant to individual acids but dissolves in aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids). ## Storage Electrum specimens are best stored in separate, padded boxes or display cases to prevent scratches and abrasions. The mineral is not sensitive to light, temperature changes, or humidity.
