Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of ecandrewsite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. It requires examination under an electron microscope with chemical composition analysis (EDS/SEM), which can reveal a high zinc content within the lamellae in ilmenite. Its black color, submetallic luster, and occurrence in the Broken Hill deposit paragenesis are clues, but not diagnostic features. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Visually, it is indistinguishable from the ilmenite in which it occurs. From other black, opaque oxide minerals, such as magnetite or hematite, it can only be distinguished based on its chemical composition (presence of zinc and titanium) and lack of magnetism. ## Crystal Forms Ecandrewsite does not form independent, visible crystals. It occurs as oriented, spindle-shaped or tabular lamellae, ranging from a few to several hundred micrometers in size, arranged along specific crystallographic planes within ilmenite crystals.

## Genesis This mineral forms under conditions of high-grade metamorphism (amphibolite to granulite facies) within zinc-rich, metamorphosed sulfide deposits. It forms as a result of exsolution from a solid solution of ilmenite-ecandrewsite during slow cooling of rocks. A high zinc content in the primary ilmenite is a necessary condition for its formation. ## Mineral Associations Ecandrewsite occurs inseparably with ilmenite (as a host mineral). It also co-occurs with other minerals from the Broken Hill deposit, such as sphalerite, rutile, galena, and pyroxenes. ## Localities The type locality and main occurrence of ecandrewsite worldwide is the polymetallic Broken Hill deposit in New South Wales, Australia. This is the only locality from which well-documented and studied specimens of this mineral originate.

These specimens are practically unavailable on the commercial market and are mainly found in university and museum collections.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens (typically ilmenite with ecandrewsite inclusions) should be cleaned only mechanically, using a soft brush and, if necessary, distilled water. Due to the microscopic nature of the inclusions, the main concern is the preservation of the host mineral. ## What to Avoid Avoid strong chemicals, acids, and ultrasonic cleaners, which could damage or etch the ilmenite surface, destroying the delicate ecandrewsite lamellae. Also avoid abrasion and impacts. ## Storage Store in stable room conditions, away from dust and moisture. The safest place is a padded display box. Polished samples intended for microscopic examination should be stored in special containers to protect their surface from scratching.
