Dusmatovite is a very rare, purple silicate with a complex composition, forming tiny grains in syenites.

## Characteristics Dusmatovite is an extremely rare mineral from the silicate group, belonging to the milarite group. It occurs as very fine, hexagonal grains or small aggregates, usually not exceeding 1 mm in size. Its most characteristic feature is an intense, purple or purplish-red color. Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, it is a mineral known mainly in scientific circles and among specialized collectors. ## Physical Properties This mineral has a hardness of approximately 6 on the Mohs scale. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. Its density is about 2.96 g/cm³. It does not exhibit cleavage, and its fracture is uneven. ## Colors and Varieties Dusmatovite is known exclusively in one color variety – from purple to purplish-red. The intensity of the color may vary slightly between individual grains. No commercial names or varieties of this mineral have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors the Tajik geologist and mineralogist Vyacheslav Dzhurayevich Dusmatov (1936–2004), who was a prominent researcher of Central Asian deposits. Dusmatovite was discovered in the Dara-i-Pioz Glacier in the Alai Mountains, Tajikistan, and officially approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1996. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, dusmatovite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and for collecting.

## Identification Dusmatovite is recognized primarily by its unique, intensely purple color, hexagonal crystal form (though rarely well-developed), and specific occurrence environment. Final identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD), due to its similarity to other minerals of the milarite group. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other purple minerals from the milarite group, such as sugilite or sogdianite, which occur in the same massif. "Eyeball" differentiation is practically impossible and requires specialized studies. It differs from them primarily in chemical composition, especially the presence of manganese and zinc in specific structural positions. ## Crystal Forms It forms small, tabular or short-prismatic crystals with a hexagonal cross-section. Most often, it occurs as irregular grains and aggregates embedded in the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Dusmatovite forms under very specific geological conditions. It is a mineral of syenite pegmatites that have undergone metasomatism. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in an environment rich in rare elements such as lithium, zinc, and manganese. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with many other rare minerals at its discovery site. The most common associations include microcline, quartz, aegirine, sogdianite, sugilite, tadzhikite-(Ce), and other minerals from the milarite group. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of dusmatovite in the world is its type locality – the Dara-i-Pioz Glacier in the Alai Mountains, Tajikistan. This is one of the world's most famous sites for rare minerals.

## Quality Criteria The most important criterion for evaluating a dusmatovite specimen is the intensity and quality of its purple color. Crystal size is also important – specimens with grains exceeding 1 mm are exceptionally prized. Contrast with a light host rock (e.g., with quartz or microcline) and the presence of well-formed, hexagonal crystals, which are extremely rare, enhance its attractiveness. ## Popular Localities All collector specimens come from a single location in the world: the Dara-i-Pioz Glacier in Tajikistan. Material from this locality is considered classic and the only one available on the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Dusmatovite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, preferably using compressed air to remove dust. If wet cleaning is necessary, it is recommended to use a soft brush and distilled water, avoiding immersion of the entire specimen, especially if the host rock is water-sensitive. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, especially acids, which can damage the mineral and the host rock. It should not be heated or subjected to sudden temperature changes. Despite its good hardness, it should be protected from impacts and scratches due to its brittleness. ## Storage Dusmatovite specimens are best stored in sealed "micromount" boxes to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Due to the small size of the crystals, display requires magnification (a loupe or microscope).
