Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of Depmeierite is impossible without advanced laboratory techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). It occurs as microscopic, colorless grains embedded in the rock, making it visually unrecognizable. ## Differentiation from similar minerals Differentiation from other colorless minerals of the sodalite and cancrinite groups (e.g., sodalite, cancrinite, microsommite) requires specialized analysis. All these minerals can occur in the same environment and have a similar appearance under a microscope. ## Crystal forms Depmeierite forms exclusively anhedral, irregular grains, typically not exceeding 100 micrometers in size.
Geological environment
## Genesis Depmeierite forms in the late stages of crystallization within calc-silicate xenoliths that have been altered by contact metasomatism under sanidinite facies conditions. This process occurs under high temperature and low pressure, in contact with alkaline magma. ## Mineral associations This mineral coexists with other rare minerals typical of this environment, such as ettringite, afghanite, calcite, diopside, gehlenite, grossular, mayenite, wollastonite, jennite, and tobermorite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of Depmeierite worldwide is its type locality – the Caspar quarry on Bellerberg mountain, in the Eifel volcanic region, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

## Quality criteria As a microscopic mineral, Depmeierite is not evaluated based on typical collector criteria such as size or color. The value of a specimen lies in its scientific significance and the analytically confirmed presence of the mineral in the host rock. The most valuable samples are those from the type locality, with rich associations of rare minerals.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic grain size, Depmeierite specimens are not subject to standard cleaning. Any manipulation should be performed exclusively under laboratory conditions with a microscope. ## What to avoid Contact with acids, which can damage the mineral's structure, should be avoided. As a member of the cancrinite group, it is likely sensitive to acids. Abrasion and ultrasonics should also be avoided. ## Storage Specimens, typically in the form of host rock fragments, should be stored in stable conditions, in specialized mineralogical boxes, away from dust, humidity, and extreme temperatures, to prevent degradation of the associated rock.
