Debattistiite is an extremely rare silver-mercury sulfarsenide-telluride, occurring as microscopic, black grains.

## Characteristics Debattistiite is a mineral from the sulfosalt group, with a very complex chemical composition containing silver, mercury, arsenic, sulfur, and tellurium. It occurs exclusively as anhedral (irregular) grains not exceeding 100 micrometers in size. These grains are most often intergrown with other ore minerals. Visually, it is black and opaque, with a strong metallic luster. ## Physical Properties The mineral's luster is metallic, and the mineral itself is completely opaque. Its Mohs hardness has not yet been determined. The density, calculated based on its chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is 6.13 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral is uniformly black. No color varieties or commercial forms are known. ## History and Name Debattistiite was officially recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2021 (IMA2021-022). Its name honors Dr. Luca Debattisti, an Italian mineral collector and specialist of the locality where the discovery was made. It was discovered in the Monte Arsiccio mine in Tuscany, Italy. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, debattistiite has no practical applications. It serves solely as an object of scientific research and is a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of microscopic minerals (so-called microminerals).

## Identification Identification of debattistiite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. Due to its microscopic size and black color, its visual distinction from other sulfosalts is unfeasible. Definitive identification requires chemical composition analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Debattistiite can be confused with numerous other rare sulfosalts found in the same locality, such as arsiccioite, boscardinite, or other dark ore minerals. The differences between them are subtle and can only be detected through precise chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms This mineral does not form well-developed crystals. It occurs exclusively as irregular, anhedral grains, strongly intergrown with other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Debattistiite forms as a result of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. It crystallizes in veins cutting a quartzite lens within metamorphic rocks (phyllites). ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in paragenesis with realgar, stibnite, pyrite, quartz, and other very rare sulfosalts, such as arsiccioite and boscardinite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of debattistiite in the world is its type locality – the Monte Arsiccio mine, located in the Apuan Alps in the Tuscany region, Italy. This locality is known for the occurrence of many unique minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Debattistiite specimens occur as microscopic grains, which cannot be cleaned by amateurs and is not recommended. Any attempt at mechanical or chemical cleaning may irreversibly destroy the mineral. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with all chemicals, acids, and detergents. The mineral is sensitive to oxidation, so it should be protected from moisture.
