## Characteristics Davyne is a complex sodium, potassium, and calcium aluminosilicate, belonging to the cancrinite group within the feldspathoids. It most commonly occurs as hexagonal, prismatic crystals, which can be elongated or short and tabular. Specimens are usually small, rarely exceeding a few millimeters, although centimeter-sized crystals are known. This mineral is most often colorless, white, or has a bluish tint, and its surfaces are characterized by a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties Davyne has a Mohs hardness of 5.5-6, which is typical for feldspathoids. Its luster is vitreous, and on fracture surfaces, it can be greasy. It is a brittle mineral, with a density of approximately 2.41-2.43 g/cm³. It is transparent to translucent. ## Colors and Varieties The most common crystals are colorless, white, grayish, or pale yellow. Less frequently, it takes on a bluish or greenish color. No named varieties of this mineral are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was named in 1825 by William Haidinger in honor of Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829), a famous English chemist and inventor who was the first to isolate sodium and potassium – key components of this mineral. It was discovered in the lavas of Vesuvius in Italy. ## Uses Davyne has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a rare representative of the feldspathoid group.

It crystallizes in cavities and miaroles in volcanic rocks, often as a product of late stages of volcanic activity. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other feldspathoids and zeolites. Typical associated minerals include nepheline, cancrinite, calcite, biotite, sanidine, augite, and various minerals from the sodalite group. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for davyne is the Vesuvius-Monte Somma volcanic complex in Italy, from which the best-known specimens originate. It is also found in the Eifel region of Germany (e.g., near Laacher See) and in Saxony. Other reported localities include Ariccia in Lazio, Italy.

Specimens from this location are the standard against which others are compared. German localities in the Eifel mountains also provide good quality microcrystals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Davyne specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, distilled water can be used, but prolonged soaking should be avoided.
