It typically forms thin to thick tabular crystals with a distinct hexagonal outline. These crystals often arrange themselves into fan-shaped or rosette-like aggregates. The mineral is completely opaque and possesses an intense metallic luster. Its color is uniformly black, and fresh fracture surfaces may exhibit a slightly iridescent sheen. ## Physical Properties Cupropearceite is a relatively soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 2.5-3, meaning it can be scratched by copper. It is characterized by a high density, approximately 6.15 g/cm³, resulting from the presence of heavy elements such as silver. It has perfect cleavage in one plane, parallel to the base of the hexagonal crystals, which makes it brittle and prone to splitting into thin lamellae. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral does not form color varieties – its color is invariably black. It also has no trade names; its name is strictly related to mineralogical classification. It is defined by the dominance of copper over silver in a specific structural position and arsenic over antimony. ## History and Name The name "cupropearceite" refers to its chemical composition – an elevated copper content (Latin: *cuprum*) – and its structural and chemical similarity to pearceite. The mineral is heavy for its size. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Visual distinction of cupropearceite from pearceite (copper-poor) and polybasite (where antimony dominates instead of arsenic) is practically impossible without advanced chemical analyses, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS). It can be confused with hematite (which has a reddish-brown streak), stephanite (different crystal habit), or enargite. ## Crystal Forms Cupropearceite crystallizes in the form of thin to thick tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline. ## Genesis Cupropearceite forms under hydrothermal conditions, in ore veins with low to medium formation temperatures. Its formation is associated with the presence of solutions rich in silver, copper, arsenic, and sulfur. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other silver sulfosalts, such as pearceite, polybasite, proustite, and pyrargyrite. Other associated minerals include acanthite (argentite), native silver, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, quartz, calcite, and dolomite. ## Localities Important global localities that have yielded well-formed cupropearceite specimens include the Uchucchacua mine in Oyon Province, Peru; the Imiter mine in Morocco; historical deposits in Chañarcillo, Chile; and some mines in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado, USA.

## Quality Criteria Specimens with sharp, well-formed crystals of hexagonal outline and strong metallic luster are most valued by collectors. Rosette-like aggregates and compositions where black cupropearceite crystals contrast with a light matrix, such as quartz or calcite, are particularly sought after. Crystal size and the absence of mechanical damage significantly increase the value of a specimen. ## Popular Localities The Uchucchacua mine in Peru is considered classic and provides the best specimens, known for its large, sharp crystals and rosettes. High-quality specimens also come from the Imiter mine in Morocco, often in association with other rare silver minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Cupropearceite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, preferably dry, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its perfect cleavage and softness, ultrasonic cleaners and strong rubbing should be avoided. If water is necessary, it should be distilled water, and the specimen should be thoroughly dried immediately. ## What to Avoid As a sulfide, cupropearceite is sensitive to moisture and air pollutants, which can cause its slow oxidation and tarnishing. Contact with acids and other chemicals should be avoided. The mineral is brittle, so it must be protected from impacts, drops, and scratching. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in a dry place, preferably in closed boxes or display cases, to limit access to moisture and dust. Using desiccants (e.g., silica gel) in the container is a good idea. Exposure to direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes should be avoided.
