Name of a discredited mineral from the phyllosilicate group, which was supposed to be a hydrated potassium-calcium silicate.

## Characteristics Cryptophyllite is a name given to a mineral material that has not been approved as a distinct mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). It is a phyllosilicate, and its name refers to its "hidden" (Greek: *kryptos*) and "leaf-like" (Greek: *phyllon*) nature. The described specimens were in the form of small, colorless to white flakes and aggregates with a pearly luster, resembling micas or other phyllosilicates. Due to its disqualification, cryptophyllite is treated as a synonym for another mineral, most likely reyerite, or as an incorrectly identified mineral phase. ## Physical Properties Due to the unapproved status of the mineral, its physical properties have not been unambiguously and reliably determined. Original descriptions indicate a very soft character and low specific gravity, which is typical for hydrated phyllosilicates. The luster was described as pearly on cleavage surfaces. ## Colors and Varieties The described material was colorless to white. No varieties were distinguished. ## History and Name The name cryptophyllite was proposed for a mineral discovered within the alkaline Murun massif in Siberia (Sakha Republic, Russia), known for the occurrence of charoite. The name comes from the Greek words *kryptos* (hidden) and *phyllon* (leaf), which was meant to reflect its occurrence in the form of hidden, small flakes in the rock. However, the name was disqualified by the IMA Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) due to incomplete characterization and its very probable identity with reyerite. ## Applications Cryptophyllite has no practical application. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in minerals from the Murun massif and mineralogists studying silicate systematics.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of cryptophyllite is practically impossible without advanced research methods (XRD analysis, chemical analysis). A key diagnostic feature "on the spot" is its origin – authentic specimens can only come from the Murun massif in Russia. Visually, it appears as small, colorless or white, pearly-lustered flakes and their aggregates. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals This material is most likely identical to reyerite. Visually, it may be impossible to distinguish from other white phyllosilicates, such as gyrolite, talc, muscovite, or apophyllite. Certain differentiation requires laboratory analysis. ## Crystal forms Cryptophyllite forms very small, thin flakes (plates) with a pseudohexagonal outline. It occurs in the form of small, leafy or scaly aggregates, often dispersed in the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis This mineral was described in rocks formed as a result of potassium metasomatism processes, which created the unique charoite deposit in the Murun massif. It is a product of hydrothermal or metasomatic alterations within highly alkaline igneous rocks and their alteration products. ## Mineral associations It co-occurs with minerals typical of the Murun massif, such as charoite, tinaksite, aegirine, microcline, quartz, pectolite, canasite, and reyerite. ## Localities The only known locality for material described as cryptophyllite is the alkaline Murun massif, located on the border of the Irkutsk Oblast and the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in Russia.

## Quality criteria As a discredited mineral, cryptophyllite is primarily a mineralogical curiosity. The collector's value of a specimen does not lie in its aesthetic qualities (it is usually an inconspicuous, white mineral), but in the authenticity of its origin from the type locality (Murun massif). The most prized specimens are those where cryptophyllite is clearly visible and well-formed, and above all, co-occurs with other rare minerals from this massif, especially charoite. ## Popular localities The only source of specimens is the Murun massif in Russia. This material is not commercially extracted, and specimens on the market come from old collections.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft brush to remove dust. Compressed air can be used from a safe distance. Contact with water, especially warm water, can lead to damage of the delicate flakes. ## What to avoid Avoid contact with all chemicals, including acids and detergents. The mineral is very soft and brittle, making it extremely susceptible to mechanical damage, scratches, and impacts. As a hydrated mineral, it is also sensitive to high temperatures, which can cause dehydration and structural damage. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in separate, sealed collector boxes, lined with soft material, to protect them from dust, light, and mechanical damage. It should not be stored in contact with harder minerals.
