Cryobostryxite is a rare, water-soluble potassium and zinc halide, forming characteristic hair-like aggregates in volcanic fumaroles.

## Characteristics Cryobostryxite is a very rare mineral from the halide group. It occurs as extremely delicate, fibrous or hair-like aggregates, which can form tangled masses or tufts. Individual "hairs" are flexible and often curled, which is a characteristic feature from which the mineral's name is derived. Due to its delicate nature and water solubility, cryobostryxite specimens are extremely difficult to obtain and preserve intact. ## Physical Properties Cryobostryxite is very soft, and its crystals are flexible. It has a very low density. It is transparent to translucent, with a luster described as silky or vitreous. Its most distinguishing feature is its water solubility. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is typically colorless or white. No color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Cryobostryxite was discovered in the products of fumarolic activity at the Tolbachik volcano on Kamchatka, Russia. It was approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2014. The name comes from the Greek words *κρύος* (kryos - cold, ice) and *βόστρυχος* (bostrychos - curl, coiled hair), referring to its occurrence in cold fumaroles and its characteristic, curly crystal form. ## Uses Cryobostryxite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and as a collector's item, as a unique and rare mineral species.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The key diagnostic feature is its unique form – extremely thin, flexible, often curled fibers forming tufts or tangled masses. The characteristic occurrence (volcanic fumaroles) is also important. Water solubility is the ultimate confirming test, although it destroys the sample. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Similar fibrous aggregates can be formed by other evaporite minerals, such as halotrichite or epsomite. However, cryobostryxite is distinguished by its characteristic "curly" appearance of individual fibers and its specific chemical composition (presence of potassium and zinc). Accurate identification requires advanced analytical methods (XRD, EDS). ## Crystal Forms Cryobostryxite exclusively forms hair-like or acicular crystals, which combine into tangled, woolly, or felted aggregates. Tufts or "sheaves" of twisted fibers are often observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Cryobostryxite is a mineral of volcanic origin, formed by the sublimation of volcanic gases in relatively cool fumaroles (at temperatures below 100°C). It crystallizes directly from the gas phase on the surface of volcanic rocks or previously deposited minerals. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare halides and sulfates formed under similar conditions. At the type locality (Tolbachik volcano), it was found together with sal ammoniac, halite, sylvite, carnallite, mitscherlichite, and the newly discovered flinteite and belloite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for cryobostryxite in the world is its type locality – the "Arsenatnaya" fumarole on the Second Slag Cone of the North Breakthrough of the Great Fissure Eruption of Tolbachik volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The most valuable cryobostryxite specimens are those with well-developed, abundant, and distinctly curled fibrous aggregates, forming aesthetic shapes on a piece of matrix. Due to its extreme rarity and delicacy, any specimen that is well-preserved and protected is valuable. The size of the specimen and the richness of the coating directly affect its value. ## Popular Localities The only source of cryobostryxite specimens is the Tolbachik volcano on Kamchatka. Material from this location is extremely difficult to obtain due to the inaccessibility of the terrain and the ephemeral nature of the mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning The mineral must absolutely not be wet cleaned, as it is water-soluble. Any contact with water, even humid air, will destroy the specimen. Mechanical cleaning is also impossible due to the extreme delicacy of the crystals. ## What to Avoid Avoid water, moisture, high temperatures, and all chemicals. The mineral is very sensitive to changes in air humidity – it absorbs water and can dissolve. It should be protected from vibrations and impacts. ## Storage Cryobostryxite specimens must be stored in hermetically sealed containers, preferably with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). They should be displayed away from direct sunlight and heat sources, in stable temperature conditions.
