## Identification Cosalite can be identified by its characteristic forms – acicular, fibrous, or radial aggregates. Key features also include its lead-gray color, strong metallic luster, black streak, and high density (the specimen feels heavy for its size). It is soft, which distinguishes it from many harder minerals of similar appearance. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Cosalite is sometimes confused with other sulfosalts and sulfides, such as jamesonite, boulangerite, or stibnite. - **Stibnite**: Usually forms thicker, columnar crystals, often longitudinally striated. It is also significantly lighter (density approx. 4.6 g/cm³). - **Jamesonite and Boulangerite**: Are visually very similar, often forming tangled, felt-like aggregates. Reliable differentiation without advanced methods (chemical analysis XRD/EDS) is extremely difficult, sometimes impossible. Cosalite more often forms radial aggregates, but this is not a rule. ## Crystal Forms Cosalite crystals are prismatic, elongated along one axis, with an acicular or hair-like habit. They most often occur as aggregates: radial rosettes, tangled fibrous masses (similar to felt), plumose clusters, or massive, granular aggregates. Single, well-formed crystals are rare.
Geological environment
## Genesis Cosalite is a hydrothermal mineral, forming in ore veins that develop at medium to high temperatures. It crystallizes from hot, metal-rich solutions circulating in rock fractures. It occurs in polymetallic veins, often associated with igneous rock intrusions, as well as in skarns and replacement-type deposits. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other sulfides and sulfosalts. Its typical associated minerals include: galena, bismuthinite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite, as well as quartz, calcite, and dolomite as gangue minerals. ## Localities The most important and classic cosalite localities worldwide include: - **Mexico**: Cosala mine in Sinaloa state (type locality). - **Canada**: Ontario (Cobalt-Gowganda area) and British Columbia. - **Sweden**: Bispberg mine in Säter, Dalarna. - **Romania**: Băița Bihor (formerly Rézbánya). - **USA**: States of Colorado, Arizona, and California. - **Italy**: Known from Elba Island. - **Czech Republic**: Vlastějovice nad Sázavou.

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, acicular crystals forming radial or chaotic aggregates, resembling "hedgehogs". The aesthetics of the aggregate, its completeness, and lack of damage are important. Contrast with clear quartz or another matrix mineral significantly enhances the specimen's attractiveness. Large, undamaged crystals or rich accumulations from classic localities (e.g., Cosala, Bispberg) fetch the highest prices. ## Popular Localities Although the mineral occurs in many places worldwide, specimens of collector significance come from a few specific localities. The most famous include those from historical mines in Sweden (Bispberg), Romania (Băița Bihor), and Canada (Ontario). Specimens from the type locality in Mexico are rare and highly sought after.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Cosalite is a very delicate and sensitive mineral. To remove dust, use only a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. Any contact with water, and especially with acids, is inadvisable. For heavier soiling, the specimen can be very carefully wiped with a dry, soft cloth. ## What to Avoid Absolutely avoid contact with water and chemicals, including common cleaning agents. The mineral is sensitive to acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid), which cause its rapid decomposition. It should not be heated or exposed to sudden temperature changes. Prolonged exposure to humid air can lead to oxidation and the formation of a dark tarnish. ## Storage Cosalite specimens are best stored in closed, dry containers or display cases to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Due to its brittleness and softness, it should be kept separate from harder minerals that could scratch it. It is a stable mineral under household conditions, as long as it is protected from moisture.
