## Characteristics Columbite-(Mg), formerly known as magnesiocolumbite, is a rare oxide mineral belonging to the columbite group. It is the magnesium analogue of columbite-(Fe) and columbite-(Mn). It typically forms black, tabular or prismatic crystals, often occurring as granular aggregates or embedded in the host rock. Its crystals can reach several centimeters, although they are most often much smaller. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale and a significant density of approximately 5.63 g/cm³. It has a black or reddish-brown color and a submetallic luster. It is opaque, and on thin edges, it may appear reddish-brown by transmitted light. It was originally described in 1962 by Alexander A. Beus under the name magnesiocolumbite, based on material from pegmatites on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. In 2007, the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) changed its name to the current Columbite-(Mg), as part of the standardization of nomenclature within the columbite group. ## Uses Due to its rarity, columbite-(Mg) has no industrial applications. However, it is an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and systematic mineralogy.
