Colchesterite is an extremely rare bismuth molybdate, forming microscopic, yellow crystals and coatings.

## Characteristics Colchesterite is a secondary bismuth and molybdenum mineral, occurring as earthy or powdery coatings. It also forms aggregates of platy or isometric microcrystals, whose size does not exceed 20 micrometers. Due to its microscopic nature, its macroscopic features are difficult to observe without appropriate magnification. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by an adamantine luster and is translucent. Its hardness has not been determined. The density, calculated based on its chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is 7.55 g/cm³, which is a very high value. ## Colors and Varieties Colchesterite is yellow to yellowish-brown in color. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Colchester district in New London County (Connecticut, USA), where its only known occurrence (Orris mine) is located. It was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2019, and its first scientific description was published in 2020.

Preliminary indications may include: yellow color, adamantine luster, high density, and co-occurrence with other secondary bismuth and molybdenum minerals in the type locality. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other yellow, secondary minerals with which it co-occurs, such as Wulfenite or Powellite. Definitive differentiation requires chemical and structural analysis. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms earthy and powdery coatings or aggregates of very small, platy or isometric crystals.

## Genesis Colchesterite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zone of granitic pegmatites. It forms as a result of weathering and alteration of primary bismuth and molybdenum-bearing minerals. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals such as Wulfenite, Powellite, Bismutite, and Sillenite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for colchesterite in the world is the Orris mine (also known as Grannis) in Colchester, New London County, Connecticut, USA.

Care and storage
