Clinophosinaite is a rare sodium and calcium silicate and phosphate, forming tiny, colorless or pink crystals with a vitreous luster.

## Characteristics Clinophosinaite is a complex sodium and calcium silicophosphate. It occurs as small, tabular or prismatic crystals, rarely exceeding a few millimeters in length. It typically forms radial or granular aggregates. It is a transparent to translucent mineral with a vitreous luster. ## Physical properties This mineral has a hardness of approximately 5 on the Mohs scale. Its density is about 2.75 g/cm³. It possesses perfect cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and varieties Clinophosinaite is most commonly colorless, white, pale pink, or purplish. No distinct color varieties or commercial varieties are recognized. ## History and name The mineral's name refers to its monoclinic crystal system and its chemical composition, which includes phosphate groups. It was first described in 1981 by A.P. Khomyakov, A.V. Bykova, and Yu.A. Malinovskii based on material from the Khibiny Massif in Russia. ## Applications Clinophosinaite has no industrial applications. It is solely of interest to collectors specializing in rare minerals and to scientists.

## Identification Clinophosinaite is difficult to identify without advanced research methods. Preliminary identification is based on its specific occurrence environment (agpaitic pegmatites), crystal habit (small, tabular), pink color, and association with other rare alkaline minerals. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals It can be confused with other colorless or pink minerals from alkaline pegmatites, such as natrolite, sérandite, or eudialyte. It differs from natrolite in crystal habit (natrolite forms acicular crystals), and from sérandite and eudialyte in hardness and other physical properties. Definitive differentiation requires chemical analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal forms It forms small, tabular or short-prismatic crystals, often grouped into radial or granular aggregates. Crystals are usually poorly formed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Clinophosinaite is a hydrothermal mineral associated with strongly alkaline pegmatites (agpaitic pegmatites) that cut nepheline syenites. It forms in the late stages of crystallization of these pegmatites. ## Mineral associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals such as aegirine, microcline, nepheline, natrolite, lomonosovite, eudialyte, sérandite, villiaumite, and other rare alkaline minerals. ## Localities The most important and well-documented occurrences of clinophosinaite worldwide are found in the alkaline massifs of the Kola Peninsula in Russia, especially in the Khibiny Massif (Mount Kukisvumchorr, Mount Yukspor) and in the Lovozero Massif (Mount Alluaiv). These are the type localities for this mineral.

## Quality criteria The most prized specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, transparent crystals of an intense pink color, set on a contrasting rock matrix, for example, in association with dark green aegirine. Due to the small size of the crystals, their sharpness and lack of damage are important. Rich aggregates are also attractive. ## Popular localities The vast majority of the best collector specimens come from pegmatites in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Specimens from this region are considered classic and most desirable.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Clinophosinaite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, distilled water can be used, but prolonged soaking should be avoided. Always dry the specimen thoroughly. ## What to avoid Avoid contact with acids and other strong chemicals that can damage the mineral's surface. Due to its perfect cleavage, it is sensitive to impacts and mechanical stress. It should not be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners. ## Storage Due to their small size and fragility, clinophosinaite specimens are best stored in sealed "micromount" boxes, lined with soft material, to protect them from mechanical damage and dust.
