## Characteristics Clinokurchatovite is a rare mineral from the borate group, being a monoclinic polymorph of kurchatovite. It usually occurs as fine-grained, compact aggregates or as anhedral (irregular) grains embedded in the rock matrix. Well-formed crystals are exceptionally rare. The mineral is most often colorless, white, or grayish, with a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of clinokurchatovite is approximately 5.5, making it a mineral of medium hardness. It has a density of about 2.99 g/cm³. It is transparent to translucent. It exhibits good cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral does not show much color variability. Its most common colors are white, gray, and colorless. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name refers to its monoclinic crystal structure (hence the prefix "clino-") and its relation to orthorhombic kurchatovite, of which it is a polymorph. Kurchatovite was named after the Soviet nuclear physicist Igor Kurchatov. Clinokurchatovite was first described in 1978 by N.N. Pertsev and other researchers from the Titovskoe boron deposit in Yakutia (Russia). ## Uses Clinokurchatovite has no industrial application. Due to its rarity and inconspicuous appearance, it is primarily of interest to specialized collectors of rare minerals and scientists studying boron deposits.

## Identification Identifying clinokurchatovite based on visual characteristics is very difficult. Key is recognizing its occurrence environment – high-temperature magnesian skarns. It usually occurs as small, white or colorless grains. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) to distinguish it from kurchatovite and other similar minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Clinokurchatovite is most often confused with its dimorph, **kurchatovite**. Distinguishing these two minerals is impossible without crystallographic analysis. It may also resemble other white skarn minerals, such as **wollastonite**, **diopside**, or **calcite**, but it is harder than them (in the case of calcite) and has a different chemical composition. ## Crystal Forms It typically forms anhedral (irregular) grains and massive, fine-grained aggregates. Subhedral (partially formed) crystals of small size are rarely observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Clinokurchatovite is a mineral of metamorphic and metasomatic origin. It forms under high-temperature conditions in contact zones between intrusions of igneous rocks (e.g., granites) and magnesium-rich carbonate rocks (dolomites). Its crystallization is associated with the influx of boron-rich solutions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other borates and skarn minerals. Its typical associations include: kurchatovite (its polymorph), sakhaite, harkerite, suanite, szaibelyite, as well as calcite, dolomite, spinel, forsterite, diopside, and phlogopite. ## Localities The most important and best-known occurrence of clinokurchatovite is its type locality – the Titovskoe boron deposit in the Tas-Khayakhtakh Mountains, in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia. This is practically the only source of collectible specimens of this mineral.

## Quality Criteria For collectors, the value of a clinokurchatovite specimen primarily depends on its scientific significance and certainty of identification. Since it is a rare and usually visually unimpressive mineral, the most prized specimens are rich aggregates with visible grains, especially in association with other rare borates. Any specimen with partially formed crystals would be considered exceptional. ## Popular Localities The only known source of collectible specimens is the Titovskoe deposit in Russian Yakutia. Specimens from this locality are the standard for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned gently, using a soft brush and distilled water. Due to the possible presence of inclusions and fractures, ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided unless the specimen is a solid, homogeneous piece. ## What to Avoid As a borate, the mineral may be sensitive to acids. Contact with household and laboratory chemicals should be avoided. It should not be heated or exposed to rapid temperature changes. ## Storage Store in separate, lined boxes to prevent scratching by harder minerals. Protect from dust and moisture. It is recommended to store in stable room conditions, away from direct sunlight.
