Chovanite is a rare lead-antimony sulfosalt, forming acicular crystals with a metallic luster.

## Characteristics Chovanite is a rare mineral from the sulfosalt group, chemically classified as a lead-antimony sulfosalt. It forms aggregates of fine, acicular or hair-like crystals, which can be elongated and flexible. Individual crystals rarely exceed 1 cm in length. It typically occurs as tangled aggregates or radial fans. Its color is steel-gray to black, and on fresh fracture surfaces, it exhibits a strong, metallic luster. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque and relatively heavy due to its high lead content. The crystals are elastic, meaning they can be slightly bent and then return to their original shape. The Mohs hardness is approximately 2.5-3, making it a soft mineral, easily scratched. ## Colors and Varieties Chovanite is an idiochromatic mineral, its color directly resulting from its chemical composition. It occurs exclusively in steel-gray and black shades. No color varieties or commercial forms are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery location – the Chovanská Valley (Slovak: Chovanská dolina) in the Little Carpathians, Slovakia. It was first described in 2007 by a team of mineralogists: Jiří Sejkora, Jaroslav Pršek, Bohuslav Bureš, and Jaromír Tvrdý. It is the type mineral (locus typicus) for this locality. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity, chovanite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for advanced collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Chovanite can be identified by its characteristic habit – it forms aggregates of thin, acicular, often tangled crystals of a steel-gray color and metallic luster. Its softness (2.5-3 on the Mohs scale) and the elasticity of its crystals are also auxiliary features. However, definitive identification requires advanced methods, such as chemical analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Chovanite can be confused with other acicular sulfosalts, such as jamesonite, zinkenite, or boulangerite. Distinguishing it from these minerals based on visual characteristics is practically impossible and requires specialized laboratory tests. Jamesonit often forms thicker, more "fibrous" aggregates, and zinkenite tends to be less elastic. ## Crystal Forms This mineral exclusively forms acicular or hair-like crystals, elongated along one axis. These crystals group into chaotic, tangled aggregates resembling felt, as well as radial or stellar clusters growing from a common center.

Geological environment

## Genesis Chovanite forms as a result of low to medium temperature hydrothermal processes. In its type locality in Slovakia, it occurs in quartz-antimonite veins that cut through Silurian black shales. Its formation is associated with the activity of solutions rich in lead, antimony, and sulfur. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other sulfosalts and sulfides. In its paragenesis at the type locality, the presence of antimonite, zinkenite, dadsonite, boulangerite, ullmannite, pyrite, sphalerite, as well as quartz, dolomite, and barite as associated minerals, has been confirmed. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence of chovanite in the world is its type locality: an antimonite vein in the Chovanská Valley, near the town of Pezinok in the Little Carpathians mountain range in Slovakia.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a chovanite specimen is primarily assessed based on the abundance and definition of its crystals. The most valued specimens are those with clearly visible, well-formed, lustrous needles, forming dense but undamaged aggregates. Contrast with bright quartz or another matrix mineral enhances visual appeal. The size of the specimen is of secondary importance, as it is a mineral that occurs in microscopic form or in small aggregates. ## Popular Localities The only source of chovanite specimens is its type locality in the Little Carpathians, Slovakia. All specimens available on the collector's market originate from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Chovanite specimens are extremely delicate. Mechanical cleaning should be avoided. If necessary, compressed air can be used to remove dust. Any contact with water or chemicals is inadvisable. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water and chemicals, which can cause oxidation and damage to the mineral. The crystals are very brittle and fragile, as well as sensitive to vibrations and impacts. It should not be exposed to high temperatures. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in stable conditions, in a closed box or display case, to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. It is best to store it in its original box from the type locality, if available.
