Cherepanovite is an extremely rare rhodium arsenide, occurring as microscopic, tin-white grains in association with platinum-group minerals.
Description
## Characteristics Cherepanovite is a rhodium arsenide, belonging to the platinum-group minerals (PGM). It occurs as very small, irregular (anhedral) grains, rarely exceeding a fraction of a millimeter. Its appearance is typical for many platinum-group metals – it has a tin-white or grayish-white color and a strong metallic luster. Due to its microscopic size, its features can only be observed under high magnification. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque and characterized by a very high density of approximately 11.01 g/cm³, which is typical for minerals containing heavy elements such as rhodium. It has a black streak and metallic luster. Its Mohs hardness has not been precisely determined. ## Colors and Varieties Cherepanovite is uniform in color, exhibiting shades from tin-white to grayish-white on a fresh fracture. It does not form color varieties or commercial varieties. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1985 by a group of Russian scientists (V. V. Rudashevskii, A. G. Mochalov, N. S. Rudashevskii, N. I. Shumskaya, V. I. Bader). Its name commemorates Vladimir Andreevich Cherepanov (1926–1981), a Russian geologist and specialist in nickel and platinum-group element deposits. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, cherepanovite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific research and a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of systematic minerals and microminerals.
Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of cherepanovite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. Its visual characteristics (metallic luster, white color) are indistinguishable from many other platinum-group minerals. Definitive identification requires chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS), which confirms the presence of rhodium and arsenic in appropriate proportions. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Cherepanovite can be confused with virtually any other white, metallic platinum-group mineral, such as irarsite, laurite, osmium, rutheniridosmine, or native platinum-group elements. The differences between them are subtle and can only be detected based on chemical composition and crystal structure. ## Crystal Forms It most commonly forms irregular, anhedral grains and inclusions in other minerals. Very rarely, poorly developed, tabular crystals of small size are observed.
Geological environment
## Genesis Cherepanovite is a mineral of magmatic origin, crystallizing in ultramafic intrusions, mainly in dunites. As a result of weathering and erosion of these rocks, resistant and heavy cherepanovite grains can be transported and concentrated in placer deposits, along with other platinum-group minerals and gold. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other platinum-group minerals, such as laurite, irarsite, rutheniridosmine, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, as well as chromite, which is the main component of the host rocks. ## Localities The most important and confirmed occurrences of cherepanovite worldwide are very few. The type locality is the Pekulney ultramafic massif in Chukotka, Russia. It is also known from alluvial deposits of the Miass River in the Chelyabinsk Oblast of the Southern Urals (Russia).

## Quality Criteria The quality of a cherepanovite specimen, being a micromineral, is judged by different criteria than for macroscopic specimens. The most important is certainty of identification, confirmed by chemical analysis. Specimens with as large grains as possible (for this mineral), rich associations with other rare platinum-group elements, and origin from the type locality are valued. ## Popular Localities The most sought-after by specialized collectors are specimens from the mineral's discovery site, i.e., the Pekulney massif in Russian Chukotka.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Cherepanovite specimens are typically microscopic grains embedded in resin (so-called "probe mounts") or in the host rock. They do not require and should not be subjected to cleaning. Any attempts at mechanical or chemical cleaning can irreversibly damage the specimen. ## What to Avoid Any manipulation, including touching, scratching, or attempts at polishing, should be avoided. As an arsenide, it is theoretically toxic, but the risk associated with a microscopic amount of the mineral is negligible. Nevertheless, situations where dust could be generated should be avoided. ## Storage Specimens should be stored exclusively in dedicated "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust, shocks, and mechanical damage. A clear label with the name and location should be ensured.
