Chalcothallite is a very rare thallium and copper sulfosalt, forming small, black crystals with a metallic luster.
Description
## Characteristics Chalcothallite is a rare mineral from the sulfosalt group, a chemically complex sulfide of thallium, copper, and iron. It forms very small, thin, tabular crystals with a square or octagonal outline. Most often, it occurs as small aggregates, coatings, and clusters composed of platy crystals. It is completely opaque and has an intense, metallic luster. Its color is uniformly black. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and a black streak. Its Mohs hardness has not yet been precisely determined. The density calculated based on its chemical composition and crystal structure is approximately 7.05 g/cm³, making it a very heavy mineral. It exhibits good, unidirectional cleavage. ## Colors and Varieties Chalcothallite is an idiochromatic mineral, whose color is a constant feature resulting from its chemical composition. It occurs exclusively in black. No colored or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1965 by A. S. Povarennykh. Its name comes from the Greek words *chalkos* (χαλκός) meaning copper and *thallos* (θαλλος) meaning thallium, referring to the two key chemical components of the mineral. The type locality, from which the first described specimens originated, is the Allchar deposit in North Macedonia.
Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of chalcothallite is extremely difficult and practically impossible without advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS). Initial suspicion can be raised based on specific features: black color, metallic luster, tabular crystal habit, and, most importantly, the locality and co-occurrence with other thallium minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Chalcothallite can be confused with many other black, metallic sulfosalts, especially those containing thallium, antimony, or arsenic. Visually, it is indistinguishable from some rare minerals from the Allchar deposit, such as raguinite. Certain differentiation requires confirmation of the presence of thallium, copper, and antimony in the chemical composition. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are very small, thin-tabular or platy, with a square cross-section, corresponding to its tetragonal symmetry. They usually form aggregates, rosettes, or coatings on the surface of the host rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Chalcothallite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in epithermal deposits, which are characterized by an elevated concentration of elements such as thallium, arsenic, antimony, and sulfur. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare minerals related to thallium mineralization. In the type locality (Allchar), it is found together with orpiment, realgar, lorandite, raguinite, and marcasite. ## Localities Chalcothallite is known from only a few localities worldwide. The most important and historical occurrence is the Crven Dol deposit within the Allchar complex, near the town of Rožden in North Macedonia. It has also been reported in Kazakhstan.

## Quality Criteria The quality of chalcothallite specimens, being primarily a micromount mineral, is assessed based on several factors. Specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals with a strong luster, grouped into aesthetic aggregates, are most highly valued. The abundance of the mineral on the matrix and the presence of well-defined crystals, rather than just coatings, are of great importance. The value of a specimen is enhanced by its co-occurrence with other rare thallium minerals, such as lorandite. ## Popular Localities The vast majority of the best quality and most desirable collector specimens come from the historical type locality – the Allchar deposit in North Macedonia. Specimens from this location are considered classic and serve as a benchmark for this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning **WARNING: The mineral is highly toxic due to its thallium content. Handle with extreme caution.** Do not wet clean chalcothallite. Any contact with water or other chemicals is inadvisable. Only mechanical dust removal with a soft brush is permissible, performed with gloves and a dust mask to avoid inhaling particles. ## What to Avoid Direct skin contact and inhalation of dust must be strictly avoided. Thallium is an element that accumulates in the body, and its salts are highly poisonous. The mineral should be protected from moisture, high temperatures, and acids. ## Storage Chalcothallite specimens must be stored in tightly sealed, durable containers (e.g., perky boxes), clearly labeled with the mineral name and a toxicity warning. Keep it away from children, animals, and other minerals to prevent contamination of the collection.
