Chalcoalumite is a hydrated copper and aluminum sulfate, forming characteristic, light blue coatings and crusts in the oxidation zones of copper deposits.

## Characteristics Chalcoalumite is a secondary copper mineral, most commonly occurring as delicate, light blue or blue-green crusts, coatings, and films. Its aggregates take on reniform, botryoidal, or spherical forms, rarely forming microscopic, tabular crystals. The surface of the aggregates can be dull or have a subtle luster. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of only 2.5, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It is characterized by a low density, approximately 2.29 g/cm³. The luster is usually vitreous, waxy, and in some cases, dull. It is a translucent mineral. ## Colors and Varieties The color palette of chalcoalumite is narrow and includes shades from light blue, through turquoise, to greenish-blue. The intensity and hue depend on impurities and crystallization conditions. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name, given in 1925 by Esper S. Larsen and Harry Berman, directly refers to its chemical composition. It comes from the Greek word *chalkos* (copper) and the Latin *alumen* (alum), reflecting the presence of copper and aluminum in its structure. It was first described based on samples from the Copper Queen mine in Bisbee, Arizona (USA). ## Applications Chalcoalumite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of interest for mineral collectors, especially those specializing in secondary minerals of the oxidation zone and micromounts.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Key features for identifying chalcoalumite are its characteristic light blue color, very low hardness (2.5 on the Mohs scale), and typical occurrence in reniform or botryoidal aggregates. Its presence in paragenesis with other secondary copper minerals is also an important diagnostic clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Chalcoalumite is sometimes confused with chrysocolla, which is, however, harder (2.5-3.5, often depending on the degree of hydration) and typically has a conchoidal fracture. It can also resemble allophane, which is, however, amorphous (does not form crystals). It is distinguished from other blue copper sulfates (e.g., chalcanthite) by its insolubility in water and the presence of aluminum in its composition, which, however, requires advanced analysis. ## Crystal Forms Chalcoalumite almost exclusively forms cryptocrystalline aggregates: crusts, coatings, films, and reniform and botryoidal aggregates. Microscopic tabular crystals are very rarely observed.

## Genesis Chalcoalumite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation (weathering) zones of copper ore deposits. It forms as a result of the action of sulfate-rich waters on rocks rich in aluminum and copper minerals. Its formation is favored by dry or semi-arid climates. ## Mineral Associations It most often co-occurs with other secondary minerals, such as azurite, malachite, brochantite, linarite, chalcanthite, as well as with gypsum, allophane, quartz, and iron oxides (limonite). ## Localities Important global localities include the historical site in Bisbee, Arizona (USA), where it was discovered. It is also known from the Atacama Desert in Chile (e.g., from the Chuquicamata mine), from mines in Cornwall (Great Britain), Lavrion (Greece), and from several locations in Germany and Italy.

## Quality Criteria The most valued by collectors are specimens with an intense, pure, light blue color, forming well-developed botryoidal or reniform shapes. Samples where chalcoalumite forms an aesthetic contrast with the color of the host rock or co-occurs with other well-developed secondary minerals, e.g., azurite, are also highly rated. ## Popular Localities Historical specimens from the discovery site – the Copper Queen mine in Bisbee, Arizona – are considered classic and most desirable. Attractive samples also come from the Atacama Desert in Chile, which often stand out for their vibrant color.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Chalcoalumite specimens are very delicate and should be cleaned with the utmost care. To remove dust, it is best to use a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. If necessary, the specimen can be very gently rinsed in distilled water, then immediately and thoroughly dried. ## What to Avoid The mineral is very soft and susceptible to scratches. Avoid contact with harder minerals and tools. As a hydrated sulfate, it is sensitive to high temperatures, which can cause dehydration and destruction of its structure. It is also soluble in acids. Under no circumstances should ultrasonic cleaners or any chemical agents be used. ## Storage Collector's specimens of chalcoalumite are best stored in separate, padded boxes or display cases to protect them from mechanical damage and dust. Stable environmental conditions should be ensured, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
