Cervelleite is a rare, metallic silver, tellurium, and sulfur mineral, forming small grains in telluride ores.

## Characteristics Cervelleite is a rare silver sulfotelluride, typically occurring as small, rounded or irregular grains, rarely exceeding 0.5 mm. It is most often intergrown with other ore minerals. Its metallic appearance and dark color are characteristic, but due to the small size of the grains, macroscopic identification is practically impossible and requires laboratory analysis. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is opaque. Its Mohs hardness is low, around 2, meaning it is very soft. The density is high, which is typical for silver-bearing minerals. ## Colors and Varieties Cervelleite is lead-gray to steel-gray, often with a bluish or purplish tint. In reflected light under a microscope, its color is described as creamy white with a pinkish hue. No varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named after Franco Cervelle, an Italian mineralogist from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Florence, who first synthesized this compound in the laboratory. The mineral was described and approved as a new species in 1989 based on material from the Bambolla mine (Calabona) in Sardinia, Italy. ## Uses Cervelleite has no industrial significance. It is solely an object of scientific and collector interest for specialists accumulating rare minerals (so-called microminerals).

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of cervelleite is impossible without specialized equipment. It requires analysis in reflected light (ore microscope), where it exhibits characteristic optical properties, and confirmation of chemical composition using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Macroscopically, it is indistinguishable from many other gray, metallic sulfides and tellurides, such as argentite, hessite, petzite, or galena. Differences can only be determined by chemical and crystallographic analysis. Under the microscope, it is distinguished from hessite by lower reflectance and lack of anisotropy. ## Crystal Forms Cervelleite exclusively forms anhedral (lacking crystal faces) grains with rounded or irregular shapes. It usually occurs as inclusions in other minerals, mainly hessite and petzite. Well-formed crystals have not been observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Cervelleite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the final stages of crystallization in tellurium- and silver-rich ore veins, under low-temperature conditions. It typically crystallizes from residual solutions after the formation of major telluride minerals. ## Mineral Associations This mineral most commonly co-occurs with hessite (Ag₂Te), petzite (Ag₃AuTe₂), sylvanite ((Ag,Au)₂Te₄), argentite/acanthite (Ag₂S), native gold (Au), pyrite (FeS₂), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂). It often forms intergrowths with hessite. ## Localities The most important and confirmed occurrences of cervelleite are: - Bambolla mine (Calabona), Alghero, Sardinia, Italy - type locality. - De Lamar deposit, Owyhee County, Idaho, USA. - Wendy mine, Tambo, Coquimbo Region, Chile. - Trixie deposit, East Tintic Mountains, Utah, USA.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a cervelleite specimen is assessed solely in the context of micromineralogy. The most desirable specimens are those in which cervelleite grains are relatively large (above 0.1 mm), clearly visible, and identified by analysis. A rich association with other rare tellurides is crucial, as it enhances the scientific and collector value of the specimen. Specimens from the type locality (Calabona) are particularly prized. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the Bambolla mine in Sardinia (Italy) and the De Lamar deposit in Idaho (USA), from which well-studied examples of this mineral originate, are most valued by specialized collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing cervelleite, usually microscopic inclusions in polished sections or small rock fragments, generally do not require cleaning. If necessary, compressed air can be used to remove dust. Contact with water and chemicals should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other chemical reagents that may react with silver, sulfur, or tellurium. The mineral is very soft, so it should be protected from scratching. Prolonged exposure to humid air may cause slow oxidation. ## Storage Specimens with cervelleite are best stored in dry conditions, in closed "micromount" boxes, to protect them from dust, mechanical damage, and humidity changes. Polished sections should be stored in special containers to prevent surface scratching.
