## Characteristics Carlfriesite is a rare mineral from the tellurate group, chemically a calcium tellurate. It most often forms coatings and aggregates of small, prismatic or tabular crystals, rarely exceeding 1 millimeter in size. Its most characteristic feature is its intense, vivid color, ranging from canary-yellow, through yellowish-green, to a chartreuse hue. The crystals exhibit a strong luster, which, combined with the vibrant color, makes it an attractive micromount mineral. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of carlfriesite is approximately 3.5, making it a relatively soft and scratch-prone mineral. It is characterized by a strong luster, described as adamantine to resinous. It is transparent to translucent. Its density is significant at 5.51 g/cm³, which is noticeable even in small specimens. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral does not form named varieties. Its color palette is uniform and limited to various shades of yellow and greenish-yellow. Color variability is slight and depends on subtle differences in chemical composition or the presence of micro-inclusions. ## History and Name Carlfriesite was first described in 1972. Its name honors Carl Fries Jr. (1910–1965), an American geologist who worked for the United States Geological Survey and made significant contributions to geological research in Mexico, where this mineral was discovered. ## Uses Due to its rarity and small crystal size, carlfriesite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

It is distinguished from much more common native sulfur by its much higher density and crystal habit. ## Crystal Forms Carlfriesite crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It forms small, well-developed crystals with a prismatic or tabular habit. It most often occurs as druzes covering the host rock or as granular aggregates in small fissures.

## Genesis Carlfriesite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zones of hydrothermal gold and tellurium deposits. It forms as a result of weathering and alteration of primary tellurides and native tellurium under the influence of oxygen-rich surface waters. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often occurs in association with other tellurates and tellurium oxides, such as tellurite, paratellurite, spiroffite, denningite, as well as with native tellurium, native gold, and quartz. ## Localities The most important and historical locality for carlfriesite, from which the world's best specimens originate, is the Moctezuma mine (also known as the Bambolla mine) in Moctezuma, Sonora, Mexico. This mineral has also been reported at the Emerald mine in Tombstone, Arizona, USA.

Crystal size is crucial – even those 1 mm in size are considered large. Associations with other rare tellurium minerals are also valuable. ## Popular Localities Virtually all carlfriesite specimens available on the collector's market come from a single location: the Moctezuma mine in Mexico. This is the classic locality for this mineral, which has provided reference materials for research and the most beautiful specimens.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Carlfriesite specimens should be cleaned with the utmost care. The safest method is to use a soft brush or a photographic air blower to remove dust. Due to its reactivity, contact with water should be avoided. If wet cleaning is absolutely necessary, use distilled water and immediately dry the specimen thoroughly. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft (hardness 3.5), so it should be protected from contact with harder minerals that could scratch it. Absolutely avoid all chemicals, acids, detergents, and ultrasonic cleaners, which can permanently damage or destroy it. Store at a stable temperature, away from moisture. ## Storage The best way to store carlfriesite is to place it in a separate, padded "micromount" box to prevent abrasion and mechanical damage. Protect from dust and direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight.
