## Characteristics Camanchacaite is a mineral from the arsenate group, characterized by its complex chemical composition. It occurs as small, colorless, tabular or bladed crystals, usually not exceeding 0.3 mm in length. These crystals often form rosette-like or radial aggregates. The mineral is transparent and exhibits a pearly luster on cleavage surfaces and a vitreous luster on other faces. ## Physical Properties The mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3. It is transparent, and its density, calculated from crystallographic data, is approximately 3.55 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties Camanchacaite is colorless. No colored varieties have been reported. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in the area of the historic Torrecillas mine in the Iquique Province, Chile. Its name comes from the word "camanchaca," used in Chile and Peru to describe a specific type of fog or low clouds (similar to garúa) that form on the Pacific coast and move inland. The name refers to the misty, pearly appearance of the mineral aggregates. Camanchacaite was approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2017 (IMA2017-044). ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic crystal size, camanchacaite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

## Identification Amateur identification of camanchacaite is practically impossible due to its microscopic size and occurrence. Recognition requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical spectroscopy (EDS/WDS), to confirm its unique crystal structure and chemical composition. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It may be confused with other secondary, colorless arsenates found in oxidation zones, such as pharmacolite or gypsum. Differentiation relies on chemical and crystallographic analysis. The characteristic pearly luster on cleavage surfaces can be a helpful clue but is not a uniquely diagnostic feature. ## Crystal Forms It forms thin, tabular or bladed crystals, elongated in one direction. These crystals often combine into radial or rosette-like aggregates, and also form thin coatings and crusts on the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Camanchacaite is a secondary mineral that forms in the oxidation zones of polymetallic ore deposits under desert climate conditions. Its formation is associated with the weathering of primary arsenic-bearing minerals, such as arsenopyrite, in the presence of solutions rich in sodium, calcium, and magnesium. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (Torrecillas mine, Chile), it co-occurs with magnesite-dolomite host rock and other secondary minerals such as anhydrite, annabergite, erythrite, gypsum, halite, quartz, talc, and tenorite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for camanchacaite worldwide is its type locality – Torrecillas mine, Salar Grande, Iquique Province, Tarapacá Region in Chile.

## Quality Criteria The quality of camanchacaite specimens is primarily assessed based on the richness and aesthetics of the crystal aggregates. Most valued are specimens with clearly formed, radial or rosette-like clusters of colorless, lustrous crystals, contrasting well with the host rock. Due to the microscopic nature of the mineral, the size of individual crystals is not a key criterion; rather, the abundance and surface coverage are important. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the Torrecillas mine in Chile. Material from this locality is extremely rare on the collector's market and is almost exclusively available through specialized rare mineral dealers.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned only very carefully, using compressed air to remove dust. Due to the small size and fragility of the crystals, contact with water or brushes is inadvisable and can lead to damage. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, acids, and other chemicals. The mineral is soft and brittle, so it must be protected from impacts, scratching, and vibrations. It should not be heated or subjected to ultrasonic cleaning. ## Storage Camanchacaite specimens should be stored in stable conditions, in sealed "micromount" containers that protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage.
