Diagnostic features
## Identification Caffeine does not occur in the natural environment as a mineral, so its identification does not apply to fieldwork. In laboratory conditions or in a collection of synthetic crystals, it can be identified by its characteristic white, needle-like crystals forming silky aggregates. Key diagnostic features include its solubility in water and sublimation under heat. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals In appearance, it may resemble some natural minerals with an acicular habit, such as natrolite, scolecite, or millerite. However, it is distinguished by its completely different, unnatural (biogenic or synthetic) origin, as well as physical properties: extreme softness, low density, and water solubility, which are not found in similarly appearing minerals. ## Crystal Forms When crystallizing from solution or during sublimation, caffeine forms elongated, acicular or bladed crystals, which often combine into chaotic, tangled aggregates with a felt-like or radial structure.
Geological environment
## Genesis Caffeine is a product of biosynthesis in over 60 plant species, where it acts as a natural pesticide, paralyzing and killing some insects. It does not form as a result of any known geological processes and is not a component of rocks or mineral deposits. ## Mineral Associations As a substance of biogenic or synthetic origin, caffeine does not co-occur with minerals in a geological context. ## Localities Caffeine has no geological localities. Its "source" is plants cultivated worldwide, mainly in the intertropical zone (e.g., coffee in Brazil and Vietnam, tea in China and India).

## Quality Criteria Caffeine is not of interest to mineral collectors. In the context of amateur crystallography or chemical demonstrations, "high quality" could refer to large, well-formed, transparent, and pure-white crystals or aesthetic needle-like aggregates. ## Market Prices Not applicable. Caffeine is sold as a chemical raw material by weight, and its price is not related to its collectible value. ## Popular Localities Not applicable in a mineralogical sense.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Caffeine crystals should not be wet cleaned, as they are soluble in water (especially hot water). Only dry cleaning is permissible, for example, using a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and other solvents must be strictly avoided. The crystals are sensitive to high temperatures – caffeine sublimes (disappears) at approximately 178°C. It should also be protected from direct sunlight, which can cause degradation of the compound over time. ## Storage Specimens of crystalline caffeine should be stored in a dry, cool, and dark place, preferably in a tightly sealed container to protect them from atmospheric moisture.
