Brass is a naturally occurring alloy of copper and zinc, recognized as a mineral, forming fine, metallic grains of a characteristic yellow color.

## Characteristics Natural brass is a mineral from the native elements group, being an alloy of copper and zinc. It occurs extremely rarely in the form of small, irregular grains or flakes, usually not exceeding a few millimeters in size. Its appearance is identical to the industrially produced product – it has a characteristic metallic luster and a yellow color, resembling gold. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque and possesses a metallic luster. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is approximately 3.5, which is similar to synthetic brass. It is a malleable and ductile material. ## Colors and Varieties The color of brass is typically yellow, and its shade may vary slightly depending on the exact ratio of copper to zinc. In nature, no named varieties of this mineral are distinguished, and its chemical composition can be variable. Other natural Cu-Zn alloys are known, such as zhanghengite (β-brass). ## History and Name The mineral's name comes directly from the widely known, man-made alloy of the same name. Natural brass was first described as a mineral in 1980 based on findings in Russia. The International Mineralogical Association (IMA) officially recognized it as a distinct mineral species. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, natural brass has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, representing a mineralogical curiosity.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identifying natural brass is difficult and usually requires advanced analytical methods, such as EDS (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis, to confirm its chemical composition (copper and zinc). Visually, in the host rock, it can be identified by its characteristic yellow color and metallic luster, which distinguish it from most other minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Natural brass can easily be confused with native gold, which has a similar color and luster. However, gold is much denser and softer. Pyrite can also be similar, but it is harder, more brittle, and crystallizes in regular cubes. Chalcopyrite has a similar luster, but its color is more brassy yellow and often has an iridescent tarnish. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms irregular, anhedral (unformed) grains and flakes, usually of small size. It is not observed in the form of well-developed crystals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Natural brass is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms as a result of processes occurring in serpentinites, where zinc-rich hydrothermal fluids interact with copper-bearing rocks. It can also form in the oxidation zones of ore deposits. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals such as chalcopyrite, magnetite, awaruite, pentlandite, and other natural copper and zinc alloys. It is often found in association with minerals from the serpentine group. ## Localities The most important confirmed localities of natural brass worldwide include the Tolbachik massif in Kamchatka (Russia), where the first discovery was made, as well as occurrences in the Chelyabinsk Oblast in the Urals (Russia) and Okayama Prefecture in Japan.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a natural brass specimen primarily depends on the size and richness of grain aggregates within the host rock. The most valued specimens are those where brass grains are clearly visible to the naked eye, have an intense, pure color, and form contrasting accumulations against the rock background. Due to the microscopic nature of most finds, any specimen with visible grains is considered valuable. ## Popular Localities The vast majority of collector specimens come from localities in Russia, especially from the Tolbachik volcanic massif in Kamchatka, which is considered the type locality for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens of natural brass are typically microscopic and embedded in the host rock. Cleaning should be limited to gently removing dust with a soft brush or compressed air. Contact with water and chemical agents should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids, bases, and other chemicals that can react with copper and zinc, leading to corrosion and discoloration. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause oxidation and the formation of patina. Specimens should be protected from scratching by harder minerals. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in a dry place, preferably in a closed display box or cabinet, to protect them from dust, moisture, and airborne contaminants. Due to the small size of the grains, "micromount" type boxes are ideal.
