Bosiite is an extremely rare, black tourmaline group mineral, known exclusively from a single gold deposit in Russia.

Description

## Characteristics Bosiite is a tourmaline group mineral, approved as a new mineral species in 2015. It forms black, opaque, prismatic crystals up to 1.5 cm long, as well as granular aggregates. Its crystals feature the rounded triangular cross-section typical of tourmalines and often exhibit longitudinal striations on their faces. ## Physical Properties This mineral has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, which is typical for tourmalines. It has a vitreous luster and a gray streak. The calculated density is approximately 3.23 g/cm³. It shows no cleavage, and its fracture is uneven to conchoidal. ## Colors and Varieties Bosiite occurs exclusively in black. No color varieties or commercial names are known. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Dr. Ferdinando Bosi, an Italian mineralogist from Sapienza University of Rome, for his contributions to the crystal chemistry of tourmaline group minerals. It was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2015. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity, bosiite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being a coveted item for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identifying bosiite in the field or in a collection is extremely difficult and relies mainly on its origin from the type locality. Visual characteristics such as black color, prismatic crystal form with a rounded triangular cross-section, hardness of 7, and vitreous luster are typical of many tourmalines. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) to determine its chemical composition. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Bosiite is visually indistinguishable from common black tourmaline – schorl. The only method to differentiate them is chemical analysis. It can also be confused with other black, prismatic minerals, such as hornblende or aegirine, but the characteristic tourmaline crystal cross-section is a helpful clue. ## Crystal Forms Bosiite forms elongated, prismatic crystals, often terminated by flat or pyramidal faces. The prism faces exhibit characteristic vertical striations. It also occurs as granular aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bosiite forms under hydrothermal conditions. It was discovered in quartz-tourmaline veins cutting tourmaline-quartz metasomatites, which in turn occur within a granodiorite porphyry intrusion. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with quartz, dravite (another tourmaline group mineral), arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and native gold. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of bosiite in the world is its type locality – the Darasun (Darasunskoye) gold mine in the Transbaikal Region, Russia.

## Quality Criteria For such a rare mineral, the main criterion of value is the authenticity of the specimen itself, confirmed by analysis. Well-formed, prismatic crystals, even if small, are most highly prized. Additional value comes from the presence of associated minerals, especially native gold, and its placement on an aesthetic rock matrix. ## Popular Localities As bosiite is known exclusively from one locality worldwide, all available specimens originate from the Darasun gold mine in Russia. Material from this location is extremely difficult to acquire and appears on the collector's market sporadically.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Bosiite specimens should be cleaned carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Due to its hardness, it is relatively scratch-resistant, but aggressive mechanical methods should be avoided, especially for specimens on a fragile rock matrix. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact of the mineral with strong chemicals, including acids and bases. Although stable, it is not recommended to subject it to sudden temperature changes. Cleaning in ultrasonic cleaners is risky for specimens with inclusions or fractures. ## Storage Collectible bosiite specimens should be stored in separate boxes or display cases to prevent potential abrasion from other minerals. It is advisable to protect them from dust and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, although its sensitivity to fading is not known.
