Boromullite is an extremely rare silicate mineral, closely related to mullite, occurring as microscopic inclusions.

Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of boromullite is impossible without advanced laboratory techniques, such as electron microscopy (SEM) combined with chemical composition analysis (EDS/WDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). Under the microscope, it appears as fine, acicular inclusions. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Macroscopically, it is indistinguishable from other microscopic acicular inclusions, such as mullite, sillimanite, or tourmaline. Key to differentiation is confirming the presence of boron in the structure, which distinguishes it from mullite (Al₆Si₂O₁₃). ## Crystal Forms Boromullite forms very fine, elongated crystals with a prismatic or acicular habit, usually not exceeding several tens of micrometers in length.
Geological environment
## Genesis Boromullite forms under conditions of high-temperature contact metamorphism, in rocks rich in aluminosilicates and boron. It forms as a result of the reaction of minerals such as andalusite or sillimanite with boron-rich fluids at temperatures exceeding 600-700°C. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with quartz, sillimanite, andalusite, corundum, and also with boron minerals such as tourmaline. ## Localities The only confirmed locality from which the type material originates is xenoliths in a small granitic intrusion at Creag an Lochain, in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland (United Kingdom).

## Quality Criteria Boromullite is not a mineral collected for traditional collecting purposes. Its value is purely scientific. For research institutions and specialized collections, the quality and certainty of identification confirmed by analyses, as well as the abundance of inclusions in the host rock, are paramount.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to its occurrence as microscopic inclusions within the host rock, individual boromullite crystals are not subject to cleaning. The host rock specimen can be cleaned according to the recommendations for the dominant mineral (e.g., quartz), using distilled water and a soft brush. ## What to Avoid Aggressive chemicals and ultrasonic cleaning should be avoided, as they could damage the host rock and potentially disturb the delicate inclusions. ## Storage Specimens containing boromullite should be stored in stable conditions, away from dust and extreme temperatures. It is best to keep them in collector's boxes, properly labeled to prevent mix-ups.
