Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of borocookeite is difficult without advanced research methods. It can be preliminarily recognized by its occurrence form – fine-scaly, rosette-like aggregates with a pearly luster. Its low hardness and perfect cleavage in one direction are also helpful features. However, definitive identification requires chemical analysis (to detect lithium and boron) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural analysis. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Borocookeite is visually almost impossible to distinguish from cookeite, talc, muscovite, or other clay minerals with a similar appearance. Cookeite does not contain boron. Talc is much softer (hardness 1) and feels greasy to the touch. Fine-scaly muscovite is harder and more elastic. ## Crystal Forms Borocookeite crystals are pseudohexagonal, tabular, or scaly. They usually occur in the form of radial, rosette-like, or spherulitic aggregates. It is also found as compact, cryptocrystalline masses.
Geological environment
## Genesis Borocookeite is a mineral of hydrothermal origin. It forms as a result of metasomatic alteration of aluminum-rich rocks under conditions of elevated lithium and boron activity. It occurs in hydrothermal veins cutting various rock types. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with quartz, calcite, fluorite, cookeite, elbaite (a variety of tourmaline), danburite, and various minerals from the zeolite group. ## Localities The most important and well-documented borocookeite localities worldwide include: - The Itatskoe borosilicate deposit in the Yenisei Ridge, Transbaikalia, Russia (type locality). - Darra-i-Pech mine in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. - Scoville locality in Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA.
