Borcarite is a rare mineral from the borate group, forming tiny, acicular crystals and fibrous aggregates with a white color and silky luster.

## Characteristics Borcarite is a hydrated borate and carbonate of calcium and magnesium. It most often occurs as small, acicular or capillary crystals, which form radial, tangled, or fibrous aggregates. Individual crystals are rarely observed. It is usually white and opaque to translucent. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by relatively low hardness, approximately 4 on the Mohs scale. Its density is close to 2.78 g/cm³. The luster of borcarite is described as silky, which is typical for its fibrous structure. ## Colors and Varieties Borcarite is a mineral of uniform coloration. It occurs almost exclusively in white, sometimes with a grayish or yellowish tint. No colored or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name refers to its chemical composition, dominated by boron (bor) and carbonates (car). It was first described in 1963 by Russian mineralogists: N.N. Pertsev, I.B. Nikitina, and Y.V. Egorov, based on specimens found in Yakutia, Russia. ## Uses Borcarite has no industrial significance. Its occurrence is very limited, and specimens have only scientific and collector value.

## Identification Characteristic features of borcarite are its white, silky aggregates with a radial or tangled structure, composed of very fine, acicular crystals. It reacts violently with hydrochloric acid, which is a key diagnostic feature allowing it to be distinguished from other fibrous minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Borcarite can be confused with other white, fibrous minerals such as ulexite, artinite, or some zeolites (e.g., natrolite). It is distinguished from ulexite by the absence of the characteristic "television stone" effect. From artinite and zeolites, it can be distinguished by its violent reaction with hydrochloric acid, which is not typical for these minerals. ## Crystal Forms Borcarite crystals are elongated, acicular, or capillary. They usually form spherical, radial aggregates, as well as fibrous clusters and tangled masses resembling felt.

Geological environment

## Genesis Borcarite is a hydrothermal mineral, forming in magnesian skarns. It forms as a result of metasomatism of carbonate rocks (dolomites) under the influence of boron-rich solutions originating from magmatic intrusions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other borates and skarn minerals. Its typical associations include calcite, dolomite, ludwigite, kotoite, szaibelyite (ascharite), magnetite, and minerals from the humite group. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for borcarite are in Russia, in Yakutia (Sakha Republic), particularly in the Titovskoye boron deposit on the Aldan Shield and the Tayozhnoye iron deposit. Outside Russia, its occurrence has also been noted in iron ore mines in China (e.g., in Dalian and Gongchangling mines in Liaoning province).

## Quality Criteria For collectors, the most valuable specimens are those with well-formed, spherical aggregates with a distinct, radial structure. Rich fibrous clusters covering the rock matrix are also prized. Contrast with darker host rock (e.g., magnetite) enhances the visual appeal of the specimen. Purity of white color and silky luster are key factors influencing quality. ## Popular Localities The most known and valued borcarite specimens come from Russian deposits in Yakutia, which are its type locality. Specimens from Chinese iron ore mines also appear on the collector's market and are sought after by specialists.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Borcarite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its fibrous and delicate nature, washing in water, which could damage the aggregates, should be avoided. If liquid is necessary, isopropyl alcohol is recommended, but with great caution. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids, which cause it to effervesce violently and decompose with the release of carbon dioxide. Contact with any chemicals should be avoided. The aggregates are brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage, thus requiring delicate handling. ## Storage Collector specimens of borcarite are best stored in sealed "membrane boxes" or padded containers that protect them from dust, shocks, and direct contact with other minerals.
