An extremely rare aluminum borosilicate, found as colorless or white, prismatic crystals in metamorphic rocks.

## Characteristics Boralsilite is a very rare mineral from the borosilicate group, chemically an aluminum borosilicate. It forms small, prismatic (columnar) crystals, rarely exceeding a few millimeters in length. It most often occurs as granular or radial aggregates, embedded in the host rock. It is a transparent to translucent mineral with a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties Boralsilite is a relatively hard mineral, with a hardness of about 7 on the Mohs scale. Its density is calculated to be 3.03 g/cm³. It exhibits good cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is usually colorless, white, or takes on pale blue hues. Due to its extreme rarity, no color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The name boralsilite directly refers to its chemical composition – it contains boron (bor-), aluminum (-al-), and silicon (-sil-). It was first described in 1991 by a team of mineralogists (Grew, Pertsev, Vrovtsev, Golovnya, Rusakov) based on material from the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan. ## Applications Boralsilite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being an object of desire for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

## Identification Amateur identification of boralsilite is practically impossible. It is a typical microscopic mineral whose identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or X-ray microanalysis (EDS). Its specific occurrence environment – high-pressure metamorphic rocks – can be a clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Boralsilite can be easily confused with many other colorless or white minerals found in similar parageneses, such as quartz, sillimanite, corundum, or topaz. Definitive differentiation is possible only based on analysis of chemical composition and crystal structure. ## Crystal Forms Boralsilite forms elongated, columnar crystals with a pseudohexagonal cross-section. They often occur as radial or disordered granular aggregates, strongly embedded in other rock-forming minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Boralsilite is a mineral of metamorphic rocks that have undergone transformation under high pressure and high temperature conditions. It forms in gneisses and similar rocks rich in aluminum and boron, often in subduction zones. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other high-pressure minerals. Its typical associations include corundum (both sapphire and ruby), sillimanite, tourmalines from the dravite-uvite series, quartz, muscovite, paragonite, and hercynite. ## Localities The only confirmed and typical locality from which boralsilite originates is the Kukurt region in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. This is one of the rarest mineralogical sites in the world.

## Quality Criteria For a mineral of such extreme rarity, the primary criterion of value is its reliable identification itself. The most highly prized are microscopic specimens (so-called micromounts) with well-formed, transparent crystals, preferably embedded in a rock matrix in association with other rare minerals, such as corundum or sillimanite. The size of the crystals, even if sub-millimeter, is secondary to their quality and confirmed identity. ## Popular Localities The only source of boralsilite specimens is its type locality – Kukurt in Tajikistan. All specimens available on the collector's market (though extremely rarely) come from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Boralsilite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, preferably with a soft brush dry to remove dust. If necessary, distilled water can be used. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can cause cracks in the crystal. ## What to Avoid The mineral should be protected from contact with strong acids and bases. As a hard mineral, it is resistant to scratches but brittle and sensitive to mechanical impacts. Sudden temperature changes should be avoided. ## Storage Due to the small size of the crystals, boralsilite specimens are best stored in specialized "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. It is not sensitive to sunlight.
