Bonazziite is a rare arsenic sulfide, polymorphic with realgar, occurring as fine-grained, orange-red coatings.

## Characteristics Bonazziite is an arsenic sulfide, being one of the polymorphs of As₄S₄. It typically occurs as very fine-grained or earthy aggregates and coatings. Its crystals, observed only at a microscopic scale, are acicular or needle-like. It usually forms coatings on other minerals, especially on realgar, as a result of its alteration under light. ## Physical Properties Due to its microcrystalline form, precise determination of physical properties such as hardness or density is difficult. The luster is described as resinous to greasy. It is a brittle mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Bonazziite has a characteristic color ranging from orange to orange-red. No varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Professor Stefano Bonazzi (born 1959), an Italian crystallographer from the University of Florence, for his contributions to the study of arsenic sulfides. It was approved as a new mineral by the IMA in 2004 (IMA2004-035). It was described based on material from the Alšar mine in North Macedonia, where it is a product of realgar alteration. ## Uses Bonazziite has no industrial applications. It is of purely scientific and collector's interest, being a subject of interest for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Bonazziite is difficult to identify unequivocally without advanced research methods (XRD, Raman spectroscopy). It can be preliminarily recognized by its orange color and its occurrence as fine-grained coatings on realgar, especially in places where realgar has undergone alteration due to light. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with pararealgar, which is also a product of realgar alteration and has a similar, yellowish-orange color. Distinguishing these two minerals under amateur conditions is practically impossible. It differs from realgar (red) and orpiment (lemon-yellow) in hue and mode of occurrence (usually as an alteration product, not primary crystals). ## Crystal Forms It forms microscopic crystals with acicular or needle-like habits, which combine into very fine-grained, earthy, or powdery aggregates and coatings.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bonazziite is a secondary mineral, formed as a result of realgar (As₄S₄) alteration under visible light. It is one of the photodegradation products of realgar, alongside pararealgar. It forms under low-temperature hydrothermal conditions and in weathering zones of arsenic-rich deposits. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with realgar (as the parent mineral), pararealgar (another alteration product), orpiment, and other arsenic sulfides and sulfosalts. ## Localities The most important and well-documented localities from which studied samples originate are the Alšar mine in North Macedonia (type locality) and the Getchell deposit in Humboldt County, Nevada, USA. Its occurrence is likely wider, but due to identification difficulties, it often remains unrecognized.

## Quality Criteria The quality of bonazziite specimens is primarily assessed based on the confirmation of its identity by analytical methods. Since it occurs as microscopic coatings, its value is determined by the richness and surface coverage on the host specimen (usually on realgar). Color contrast with the substrate can enhance aesthetic appeal. Specimens from well-documented localities, especially the type locality (Alšar), are more highly valued. ## Popular Localities The most sought-after specimens by specialized collectors are those from the Alšar mine in North Macedonia and the Getchell mine in Nevada, USA, as these are classic, well-studied localities for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Bonazziite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive. Mechanical cleaning and contact with water should be avoided. If absolutely necessary, a stream of compressed air can be used from a distance to remove loose dust. ## What to Avoid Bonazziite is very sensitive to light, which causes its further alteration (to pararealgar). Exposure to sunlight and strong artificial lighting must be strictly avoided. It is also sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. It must not be washed with water or any chemicals. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in complete darkness, in a tightly sealed, dry container. The best solution is a light-proof box placed in a stable environment. Display is not recommended due to the mineral's instability.
