## Characteristics Bohdanowiczite is a rare mineral from the selenide group, chemically classified as a silver bismuth selenide. It typically occurs as very fine, anhedral (irregular) grains, rarely exceeding 0.1 mm, disseminated in calcite or co-occurring with other ore minerals. Its appearance is typically metallic, with a color ranging from creamy white to gray, often with a pinkish or yellowish tint, especially visible on fresh surfaces in reflected light. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a strong metallic luster. Due to its occurrence as very small grains, determining many physical properties, such as hardness or density, is difficult. Its Mohs hardness is estimated at around 3, and its calculated density is 8.35 g/cm³. It is an opaque and brittle mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Bohdanowiczite is usually creamy white, sometimes with a pinkish or yellowish tint. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1967 by M. Banaś, J. Kucha, and Z. Piekarski. Its name commemorates the Polish geologist Karol Bohdanowicz (1864-1947), a researcher of ore deposits and author of numerous works on the geology of Central Asia and Europe. ## Uses Bohdanowiczite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a rare and well-defined mineral species.

## Identification Identification of bohdanowiczite is impossible without specialized equipment. It requires analysis in reflected light (ore microscope), where it exhibits a characteristic color and strong anisotropy (color change upon stage rotation). Final confirmation requires advanced methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) to determine its chemical composition (presence of Ag, Bi, Se). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other bismuth and silver selenides, such as naumannite (Ag₂Se) or matildite (AgBiS₂). Naumannite has a similar appearance but a different silver-to-bismuth ratio. Matildite is a sulfide, not a selenide. Differentiation is only possible based on chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Bohdanowiczite forms exclusively anhedral, irregular grains, often with rounded or oval shapes. No well-formed crystals have been observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bohdanowiczite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms at low to medium temperatures in ore veins, typically calcite or quartz-calcite veins, rich in selenium. Its presence indicates specific geochemical conditions where selenium concentration was sufficiently high for selenides to crystallize instead of more common sulfides. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other selenides and sulfides. It is most commonly associated with: naumannite, clausthalite, tiemannite, umangite, eskebornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, as well as uraninite (pitchblende) and hematite. The gangue mineral is usually calcite. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for this mineral are: - Kletno near Stronie Śląskie in the Śnieżnik Massif, Poland (type locality). - Předbořice and Zálesí in the Czech Republic. - Other known occurrences include the Tumiñico mine in Argentina, Eskeborn in the Harz Mountains in Germany, and the Lake Athabasca region in Canada.

Samples from the type locality (Kletno, Poland) and those containing rich associations of other rare selenides, visible under the microscope, are most prized. ## Popular Localities For collectors specializing in systematic and ore minerals (so-called "micromounts"), specimens from the type locality - Kletno in Poland - are most sought after. Material from Czech localities (Předbořice, Zálesí) is also valued.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing bohdanowiczite, due to their microscopic nature and fragility, should generally not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any attempts at cleaning may damage or remove the tiny mineral grains. If dust removal is necessary, a gentle stream of compressed air can be used. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with any chemicals, especially acids, which can react with selenides. The mineral is brittle, so it should be protected from impacts and vibrations. Prolonged exposure to humid air can lead to slow oxidation. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in stable conditions, in sealed containers or display cases, to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. It is best to store them in their original "micromount" boxes.
