Bogdanovite is a very rare mineral, a complex alloy of gold, copper, lead, and iron, found in gold and copper deposits.

## Characteristics Bogdanovite is an extremely rare mineral from the native elements group, classified as a metal alloy. It occurs as small, irregular grains up to 0.4 mm in size, usually intergrown with other minerals. Its appearance is metallic, and due to the small size of the crystals, macroscopic features are difficult to observe without specialized equipment. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is opaque. Its Mohs hardness is 4.5-5. It is a brittle mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Bogdanovite has a color ranging from brown to purplish-brown, with a reddish tint in reflected light. No varieties are known. ## History and Name It was discovered in 1978 and named after the Russian geologist Aleksey Alekseevich Bogdanov (1907-1971), a specialist in structural geology and tectonics. The mineral was approved by the IMA in 1978 (IMA1978-046). ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence in microscopic quantities, bogdanovite has no industrial applications. It is solely of scientific interest and is sought after by specialized collectors of rare minerals.

## Identification Identification of bogdanovite is only possible using advanced laboratory techniques, such as ore microscopy in reflected light (characteristic color and anisotropy) and chemical analysis (e.g., electron microprobe - EDS/WDS) to confirm its unique chemical composition. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Macroscopically, it is impossible to distinguish from other metallic inclusion minerals. In microscopic studies, it can be confused with other tellurides or metal alloys. Definitive differentiation requires chemical composition analysis. ## Crystal Forms Bogdanovite forms irregular, anhedral (not showing its own faces) grains and aggregates, usually intergrown with other minerals, such as chalcopyrite or native gold.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bogdanovite forms under hydrothermal conditions. It has been identified in gold and copper deposits, where it crystallizes with other sulfides and tellurides. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with chalcopyrite, native gold, bornite, and also with other rare tellurides, such as bilibinskite and bezsmertnovite. ## Localities Its occurrence has been confirmed in two main localities worldwide: - At the type locality: Pervomaiskoe gold deposit on Alatau Mountain, Uzbekistan. - In the Oktyabrskoye gold deposit, near Norilsk in Siberia, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a bogdanovite specimen is determined not by the microscopic mineral itself, but by the richness of the mineral association and the confirmation of its presence through analysis. The most valuable are polished sections where bogdanovite is clearly visible in association with other rare tellurides, such as bilibinskite or bezsmertnovite. The size and richness of the bogdanovite grain aggregate also increase its scientific and collector value. ## Popular Localities The only sources of collector specimens are the two known deposits: Oktyabrskoye in Russia and Pervomaiskoe in Uzbekistan. Specimens from these localities, especially those with well-documented bogdanovite presence, are highly sought after by specialized collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the microscopic size of the grains and their occurrence within other minerals (matrix), cleaning individual bogdanovite grains is impossible. A specimen containing bogdanovite should be treated like a specimen of the host mineral in which it occurs. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and aggressive chemicals, which could damage both bogdanovite and associated minerals. Protect the specimen from mechanical damage. ## Storage Specimens containing bogdanovite, typically in the form of polished sections for microscopic examination or small rock fragments, should be stored under stable conditions, in specialized mineral boxes, to prevent scratches and contact with other specimens.
