Diagnostic features
## Identification The key diagnostic feature of bischofite is its extreme hygroscopicity – a specimen left in the air quickly becomes damp and sticky. Other characteristics include very low hardness, solubility in water, and a bitter taste. It is also light to the touch. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Bischofite can be confused with other water-soluble halides, such as halite (rock salt) or sylvite. Halite has a salty taste and crystallizes in the isometric system (cubic crystals), and its hardness is higher (2.5). Carnallite, another magnesium and potassium chloride, is also hygroscopic but usually has more complex crystal forms and often co-occurs with sylvite and halite in characteristic parageneses. ## Crystal Forms Well-formed crystals are very rare. If they occur, they take the form of tabular or short prismatic crystals in the monoclinic system. Most often, however, bischofite forms massive, granular, fibrous, or amorphous aggregates within salt deposits.
Geological environment
## Genesis Bischofite is an evaporite mineral, meaning it forms as a result of the evaporation of water from highly saline water bodies, such as seas or salt lakes. It crystallizes as one of the last minerals in the evaporitic sequence, after the precipitation of calcite, gypsum, anhydrite, and halite. Its formation requires a very high concentration of magnesium and chlorine ions in the solution. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other salt minerals, such as halite, sylvite, carnallite, kainite, kieserite, and anhydrite. These minerals together form potash-magnesium salt deposits (potash salts). ## Localities Significant bischofite deposits, often of economic importance, are found in Germany (e.g., in the Stassfurt region, where it was first described), Russia (Volgograd and Ural regions), China, and also in the USA (in salt basins in Texas and New Mexico). In Poland, it occurs in Zechstein salt domes, for example, in the Kłodawa and Inowrocław regions.

## Quality Criteria The quality of collector specimens of bischofite is assessed differently than for most minerals, due to its instability. The most prized are extremely rare, well-formed, transparent crystals, even if small. For massive forms, purity and lack of impurities are important. However, the key factor is the state of preservation of the specimen – it must be dry and unaltered, which indicates proper storage since its extraction. Specimens preserved in their original salt matrix are also desirable. ## Popular Localities Classic and historical specimens come from the salt deposits in Stassfurt, Germany. Currently, interesting specimens, including rare crystals, have been found in China and in some regions of Russia.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Bischofite is extremely sensitive to water and moisture. It must absolutely not be cleaned with water or any liquids. The only safe method is to mechanically remove dust using a very soft, dry brush or a stream of compressed air from a distance. ## What to Avoid Above all, contact with water and humid air should be avoided. This mineral is highly hygroscopic and, under normal room humidity conditions, will spontaneously absorb water from the air, becoming sticky and eventually dissolving into a solution. It should also be protected from high temperatures. ## Storage Bischofite specimens require special storage conditions. They must be kept in hermetically sealed containers (e.g., "perky boxes") along with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel), which should be replaced regularly. Alternatively, the specimen can be immersed in an anhydrous liquid, such as mineral oil, to prevent contact with air.
