Birunite is a discredited mineral name for a mixture of minerals, primarily calcite, thaumasite, and aragonite, forming white, fibrous aggregates.

## Characteristics Birunite is a name originally given to a substance believed to be a new mineral. However, studies have shown that it is not a homogeneous mineral phase but a fine-grained, tangled mixture of several other minerals. Typical specimens appear as white or creamy-white, dense aggregates with a silky luster, composed of extremely thin, acicular or fibrous crystals. ## Physical Properties As a mixture, birunite does not possess constant, unambiguously definable physical properties. Its hardness, density, and other characteristics are the result of the properties of its main components: calcite, aragonite, and thaumasite. Aggregates are typically soft and brittle. ## Colors and Varieties It is observed exclusively in white, sometimes with a creamy or grayish tint. It does not form color varieties or commercial varieties, as it is not a recognized mineral species. ## History and Name The name birunite was first used to describe material found in skarns of the Tazheran massif on Olkhon Island (Lake Baikal, Russia). For years, its status was uncertain. Finally, in 2003, Russian mineralogists S.V. Malinko and N.V. Chukanov, along with their collaborators, published research results that unequivocally proved birunite to be a mixture. Based on this, the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) officially discredited its status as a mineral. The name now has only historical significance. ## Applications Birunite has no industrial applications. It is solely of interest to collectors specializing in rare or historical specimens from specific localities, as well as systematic mineralogists.

## Identification Identification of "birunite" is primarily based on its appearance – white, silky, fibrous aggregates – and knowledge of its sole locality (Tazheran massif). Under collector conditions, it is virtually impossible to confirm without advanced methods. Definitive identification would require X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, which would show diffraction peaks characteristic of calcite, thaumasite, and aragonite, rather than a unique crystalline phase. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Birunite can be visually indistinguishable from many other white, fibrous minerals, such as okenite, natrolite, pectolite, or even some forms of gypsum (satin spar). The key distinguishing feature is its polymineralic nature, which cannot be determined without laboratory analysis. Reaction with dilute hydrochloric acid (effervescence) would indicate the presence of carbonates (calcite, aragonite), which can be a clue. ## Crystal Forms As a mixture, birunite does not form its own defined crystals. It occurs exclusively as very fine, tangled fibers forming dense, compact aggregates with a silky appearance.

Geological environment

## Genesis The original material described as birunite formed in the contact zone between granites and carbonate rocks (marbles). It is a product of metasomatic or hydrothermal processes occurring in skarns. Its components (calcite, aragonite, thaumasite) co-crystallized under specific physicochemical conditions. ## Mineral Associations The minerals forming birunite are calcite, thaumasite, and aragonite. In the rocks where it was found, it coexists with other minerals typical of skarns, such as diopside, wollastonite, garnets, as well as brucite and perovskite. ## Localities The only confirmed and historical occurrence of the material known as birunite is the Tazheran massif on Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal, in Siberia (Russia).

## Quality Criteria Since birunite is a discredited mineral, its collector value is purely historical and sentimental. The most desirable specimens are those from the original find, with accurately documented locality (label). Quality is assessed based on the aesthetics of the fibrous aggregate, its purity (lack of dirt), and integrity. However, this is an item for highly specialized collectors. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the historical type locality in Russia. This material practically does not appear on the mineral market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Birunite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive to water due to the presence of thaumasite. Cleaning should be limited to an absolute minimum. Only very careful dust removal using a soft, dry brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance is permissible. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, which can cause dissolution and disintegration of the specimen, must be strictly avoided. The use of any chemical agents, including acids (it reacts with calcite and aragonite), is also not recommended. The material is soft and brittle, so it should be protected from impacts, vibrations, and abrasion. Store away from moisture. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, dry containers (e.g., membrane boxes or display cases) to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. They should not be exposed to direct sunlight or sudden temperature changes.
