## Characteristics Biringuccite is a mineral from the borate group, chemically a hydrated sodium borate. It occurs rarely, forming aggregates of small, colorless to white crystals with an acicular or fibrous appearance. Due to the small size of its crystals, its macroscopic features are difficult to observe, and identification usually requires advanced analytical techniques. ## Physical Properties Biringuccite crystals exhibit a vitreous to silky luster, depending on the form of aggregation. No colored or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1961 by Cesare Brisi and Federico Abbatista. The name "biringuccite" honors Vannoccio Biringuccio (1480–1539), an Italian metallurgist and author of "De la Pirotechnia," considered one of the first printed books on metallurgy. ## Uses Biringuccite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

## Genesis Biringuccite is an evaporitic mineral. It forms from the evaporation of saline waters of boron-rich lakes (known as salars or borate playas) under dry and hot climatic conditions. It crystallizes directly from brines or during the diagenesis of lake sediments. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other evaporites, especially with other borates and salts. It is most commonly associated with borax, kernite, ulexite, tincalconite, as well as halite and thenardite. ## Localities The most important occurrences of biringuccite are in the USA, in the deposits of dried lakes in California (Boron in Kern County, Searles Lake in San Bernardino County) and Nevada. It is also reported from the Tincalayu region in Argentina and Laguna Salinas in Peru.
