## Characteristics Billwiseite is a very rare mineral from the oxide group, composed of antimony, niobium, and tungsten. It occurs as extremely small, tabular or bladed crystals, reaching sizes up to 100 micrometers. The crystals are flattened and often form irregular aggregates or rosettes. Due to its size, its observation requires the use of advanced equipment, such as a scanning electron microscope (SEM). ## Physical Properties Billwiseite crystals are black and opaque, with a metallic luster. The mineral is brittle. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, many of its physical properties, such as hardness or density, have not been precisely measured, but only calculated based on its chemical composition and crystal structure. ## History and Name The mineral was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2017 under number IMA2017-036. Its name honors Bill Wise (born 1935), a retired professor of geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in recognition of his contributions to the mineralogy of pegmatites, especially those from San Diego County, California.

## Identification Identification of billwiseite is impossible without advanced laboratory techniques. It requires the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with chemical composition analysis (EDS) to confirm the presence of antimony, niobium, and tungsten. The characteristic morphology of small, black, tabular crystals is an indication but is not sufficient for certain identification. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Based on appearance alone, it is indistinguishable from other black, microscopic oxide minerals that may coexist with it, such as rutile, ilmenite, or other rare oxides. Certain differentiation is possible only through chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Billwiseite forms very small, thin, tabular or bladed crystals, flattened parallel to {010}. Crystals can occur individually or form irregular, rosette-like aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Billwiseite forms in complex, granitic pegmatites, rich in lithium and phosphates. It is a secondary mineral, crystallizing in the late stage of pegmatite evolution, likely as a result of hydrothermal or metasomatic processes that lead to the concentration of rare elements such as niobium, antimony, and tungsten. ## Mineral Associations This mineral is found in paragenesis with quartz, albite, microcline, as well as rarer minerals such as stibiotantalite, eucryptite, amblygonite, lithiophilite, fluorapatite, and siderite. It occurs directly on or near quartz crystals. ## Localities The only known occurrence of billwiseite in the world (type locality) is the Little Three pegmatite, located in Ramona, San Diego County, California, USA.

## Quality Criteria As a microscopic mineral, billwiseite is not evaluated according to typical criteria such as size or color. The collector's value of a specimen lies in the abundance and good definition of microscopic crystals visible under high magnification, as well as the confirmation of its identity by analysis. The most valuable specimens are those with well-formed, distinct crystal aggregates on a contrasting substrate, e.g., on quartz.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to their microscopic size and rarity, billwiseite specimens are not subjected to standard cleaning. They are typically preserved in the state in which they were found, on their primary host rock. Any attempt at cleaning could irrevocably damage or remove the delicate crystals. ## What to Avoid Any mechanical interference, contact with chemicals, ultrasound, and extreme temperature changes should be avoided. Specimens should be protected from dust and vibrations. ## Storage Specimens containing billwiseite should be stored in specialized, sealed "micromount" boxes, which protect the delicate crystals from damage and dust. Storage under stable room conditions is sufficient.
