Berzeliite is a rare arsenate of the garnet group, valued for its intense honey-yellow color and occurrence in classic localities.

## Characteristics Berzeliite is a sodium, calcium, and magnesium arsenate belonging to the garnet group. It typically forms massive, granular, or cryptocrystalline aggregates embedded in the host rock. Well-formed crystals are exceptionally rare and most often take the form of rhombic dodecahedra typical of garnets, reaching small sizes, rarely exceeding a few millimeters. The mineral is characterized by vibrant, warm coloration, from lemon-yellow, through honey-yellow, to orange. ## Physical Properties Its Mohs hardness is 4.5-5, making it a relatively soft mineral, susceptible to scratching by harder materials. The luster is most often vitreous, transitioning to greasy on some surfaces. Berzeliite is translucent, and in thicker fragments or compact aggregates, it becomes opaque. It exhibits no cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal to uneven. The mineral's density ranges from 4.03-4.08 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The dominant colors of berzeliite are shades of yellow and orange. Whitish or almost colorless specimens are also found. No color varieties are distinguished. Manganberzeliite, in which manganese replaces magnesium, is a closely related mineral. Distinguishing these two minerals is impossible without chemical analysis. ## History and Name The mineral's name, given in 1840 by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, honors the eminent Swedish chemist, Jöns Jacob Berzelius, who was the first to analyze the chemical composition of specimens from the type locality. ## Uses Due to its rarity and toxicity (it is an arsenate), berzeliite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors and scientists.

## Identification Characteristic features of berzeliite include its intense yellow or orange color, vitreous to greasy luster, and lack of cleavage. A key diagnostic clue is its paragenesis – co-occurrence with manganese minerals in metamorphic rocks from classic localities such as Långban or Franklin. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals Berzeliite is visually indistinguishable from manganberzeliite; this requires chemical analysis. It can be confused with some yellow garnets (e.g., andradite), which are, however, much harder (above 6.5 on the Mohs scale). Yellow sphalerite, although similar in color, has perfect cleavage and a darker streak. ## Crystal forms It most often occurs in the form of massive or granular aggregates. Rare, well-formed crystals are rhombic dodecahedra, sometimes with small trapezohedral faces. They are usually strongly intergrown with the rock and rarely occur as free, isolated crystals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Berzeliite is a mineral of metamorphic origin. It forms in iron and manganese ore deposits that have undergone transformation under high temperature and pressure conditions, often within skarns. ## Mineral associations This mineral often co-occurs with other manganese and calcium minerals. Its typical associations include hausmannite, tephroite, rhodochrosite, rhodonite, barite, calcite, as well as rarer minerals such as karynite or magnussonite, especially in the Långban locality. ## Localities The most important and historical occurrences of berzeliite are the Långban mine in Värmland, Sweden (type locality), and the Franklin and Sterling Hill deposits in New Jersey, USA. It is also known from the Gozaisho mine in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, and from Val Malenco in Italy.

## Quality criteria The most highly valued berzeliite specimens are characterized by an intense, saturated honey-yellow or orange color. Rare, well-formed, and lustrous crystals, even of small size, are exceptionally sought after. The value of a specimen is also enhanced by its association with other rare minerals from classic localities, such as Långban or Franklin. Massive specimens are much more common and less valued. ## Popular localities The best specimens in the world are considered to come from Långban in Sweden and Franklin in the USA. They provide the most classic and association-rich specimens of this mineral, which adorn advanced systematic collections.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Berzeliite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can cause cracks in fragile crystals or aggregates. ## What to avoid Berzeliite is an arsenate and is toxic. Avoid inhaling dust during cleaning or preparation of specimens. Hands must be thoroughly washed after any contact with the mineral. The mineral is sensitive to acids and strong chemicals. It should be protected from scratching by harder minerals (e.g., quartz) and from sudden temperature changes. ## Storage It is recommended to store berzeliite specimens in separate, sealed display boxes, which protects them from mechanical damage and dust. It is important to clearly label the specimen with a warning about its toxicity, especially in collections accessible to children.
