Diagnostic features
## Identification Identifying bertossaite is very difficult and usually requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). In the field, it is practically impossible to distinguish from other white pegmatite minerals, such as quartz, albite, or other phosphates from the amblygonite group. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Bertossaite is visually almost identical to amblygonite, montebrasite, and other minerals from this group. Differentiation is only possible based on chemical composition analysis – bertossaite is distinguished by the presence of calcium, which is absent in amblygonite. It can also be confused with albite or milky quartz, from which it differs in higher density and chemical properties. ## Crystal Forms Well-formed bertossaite crystals are not known. This mineral occurs exclusively as anhedral grains and massive, compact aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Bertossaite is a mineral of magmatic origin, crystallizing in the late stages of the evolution of lithium- and phosphorus-rich granitic pegmatites. It forms in complex, phosphate-rich zones of these pegmatites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other minerals typical of granitic pegmatites, such as quartz, amblygonite, montebrasite, eucryptite, lithiophilite, triphylite, vivianite, apatite, herderite, and muscovite. ## Localities The most important and type locality (localitas typica) is the pegmatite near Mangualde in the Viseu district of Portugal. Beyond this locality, its presence has only been confirmed in a few other places worldwide, including Brazil (Jocão mine, Minas Gerais) and Rwanda (Buranga deposit).

## Quality Criteria The quality of a bertossaite specimen is primarily assessed based on its purity and abundance within the sample mass. Since this mineral does not form aesthetic crystals, the most valued pieces are the largest, most homogeneous fragments possible, which have been positively identified analytically. A well-documented locality is also important, especially if the specimen comes from the type locality (Mangualde). ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens of collector significance is the type locality in Mangualde, Portugal. Specimens from other, few localities are extremely rare and practically unavailable on the market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Bertossaite specimens should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft, dry brush to remove dust. Due to possible reactivity and the presence of fractures, contact with water, and especially chemical cleaning agents, should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they could damage brittle and fractured aggregates. The mineral should be protected from acids and other aggressive chemicals. It should not be heated or exposed to rapid temperature changes. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in stable conditions, in closed collector boxes or display cases, to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Exposure to moisture should be avoided.
