Berndtite is a rare tin sulfide, forming characteristic hexagonal crystals with a metallic luster and a yellowish-brown color.

## Characteristics Berndtite is a tin sulfide, known for occurring in several polymorphic forms, the most common of which (2H) crystallizes in the hexagonal system. It most often forms small, tabular or platy crystals with a hexagonal outline. It also occurs as radial or spherulitic aggregates, as well as granular and massive accumulations. Its appearance is characteristic, with a distinct metallic luster on fresh surfaces. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft; its Mohs hardness is only 1, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It is heavy and dense, with a density of approximately 4.6 g/cm³. It possesses perfect cleavage in one direction, causing it to easily split into thin, flexible lamellae, similar to mica. The luster is metallic, and the mineral is opaque. ## Colors and Varieties Berndtite typically ranges in color from yellowish-brown and brown to grayish-yellow. Its streak, the color of the powdered mineral, is light yellow. Various berndtite polytypes are known (e.g., 2H, 4H, 6R), which differ in the arrangement of layers within the crystal structure; however, these differences are impossible to ascertain without advanced X-ray studies. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors Dr. Fritz Berndt (1899-1945), a German chemist and mineralogist from the University of Halle, who first synthesized its analogue. The mineral was described and approved as a new species in 1963 based on specimens found in Bolivia. ## Uses Berndtite has no industrial significance. It is a mineral of interest and sought after solely from a collector's and scientific perspective due to its rarity and chemical composition.

## Identification Key diagnostic features of berndtite include its extremely low hardness (1 on the Mohs scale), perfect cleavage in one direction, resulting in flexible lamellae, and its characteristic yellowish-brown color and metallic luster. Its density is relatively high for such a soft mineral. A light yellow streak is also an important clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Berndtite is sometimes confused with molybdenite, which is also very soft and has similar cleavage, but molybdenite is lead-gray in color and has a grayish-black streak. It is distinguished from golden micas (e.g., phlogopite) by its significantly higher density, metallic luster, and opacity. Other similar sulfides, such as greenockite, are usually harder and do not exhibit such perfect cleavage. ## Crystal Forms Berndtite most often forms hexagonal, tabular crystals, often gathered in rosette-like or radial aggregates. It also occurs as spherulitic accumulations, where crystals radiate from a common center, and as granular or massive infillings.

Geological environment

## Genesis Berndtite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the final stages of crystallization in ore veins, often associated with granitoid intrusions. It forms in an environment rich in tin and sulfur, under conditions of relatively low pressure and temperature. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with other tin sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as other metals. Its most common associated minerals include: pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, galena, stannite, franckeite, cylindrite, and quartz and siderite. ## Localities The most important and classic berndtite localities are in Bolivia, from where type specimens originate, including mines in the Potosí department (e.g., Veta de Estaño mine, Carguaicollo) and Oruro. It is also known from several localities in Japan (e.g., Ikuno mine in Hyōgo Prefecture) and from the Czech Republic (Kutná Hora).

## Quality Criteria Specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals with a distinct hexagonal outline are most valued by collectors. Rosette-like or radial aggregates enhance their attractiveness, especially when set on a contrasting rock matrix. An intense, metallic luster and a clean, yellowish-brown color without tarnish are also important. Specimens from classic Bolivian localities are particularly sought after. ## Popular Localities By far the most desired specimens come from Bolivian tin deposits, such as Carguaicollo, Cerro de Potosí, and mines in the Oruro district. They serve as the standard for this mineral and command the highest prices in the collector's market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Berndtite specimens are extremely soft and delicate. They should be cleaned only very carefully, using compressed air to remove dust. Any contact with hard tools, or even vigorous rubbing with a soft cloth, can cause irreversible damage and scratches. The use of water is not recommended, as it can penetrate cleavage planes. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, especially acids, which can react with sulfides. The mineral is susceptible to mechanical damage – drops, impacts, or scratches. It should not be subjected to ultrasound or steam cleaning. Store away from moisture to prevent potential oxidation processes. ## Storage Berndtite should be stored separately, in a padded display box, to avoid contact with harder minerals that could scratch it. Due to its softness and perfect cleavage, it is not suitable for display in locations where it might be exposed to vibrations, dust, or handling.
