Diagnostic features
## Identification Identifying bernarlottiite is extremely difficult and impossible without advanced analytical methods. Identification requires chemical analysis (e.g., using an electron microprobe - EDS/WDS) and crystallographic studies (X-ray diffraction - XRD). Under collecting conditions, it can only be tentatively identified based on its location (Apuan Alps), form (tiny, acicular crystals), and co-occurrence with other rare sulfosalts. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals Bernarlottiite is visually indistinguishable from many other acicular sulfosalts, such as zinkenite, jamesonite, or other rare minerals from this group found in the Apuan Alps. Certain differentiation is possible only based on chemical composition and crystal structure. ## Crystal forms The mineral forms very fine, acicular or hair-like crystals, often grouped into tangled or radial aggregates. The crystals are elongated along one crystallographic axis.
Geological environment
## Genesis Bernarlottiite forms as a result of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. In its type locality (Seravezza, Italy), it crystallizes in small cavities (druses) within silicate-barite-iron-oxide veins that cut through Silurian dolomitic marbles. ## Mineral associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare sulfosalts, such as sphalerofibrite, destinezite, marrucciite, and with more common minerals like pyrite, sphalerite, and quartz. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of bernarlottiite in the world is its type locality: a marble quarry near Seravezza, Apuan Alps, Province of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy.

## Quality criteria The quality of a bernarlottiite specimen primarily depends on the richness and size of the crystal aggregates. Specimens with clearly visible, well-formed, though still microscopic, needles forming dense clusters on a contrasting rock matrix are most valued. Association with other rare minerals is also important. ## Popular localities The only source of specimens is the quarry in Seravezza, Italy. Material from this locality is highly sought after by specialized "micromount" mineral collectors.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to the extreme delicacy and small size of the crystals, mechanical cleaning is not recommended. If absolutely necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance to remove loose dust particles. Contact with water and any chemicals should be avoided. ## What to avoid Avoid ultrasound, chemical agents (acids and bases), high temperatures, and humidity. The mineral is very brittle and sensitive to mechanical shock. Prolonged exposure to air can cause it to oxidize. ## Storage Bernarlottiite specimens should be stored exclusively in stable, sealed "micromount" containers to protect them from physical damage, dust, and humidity changes. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
